Abstract: The present invention provides a roadway barrier or guard rail system which has a post (12) which passes through the carriage (20) with the carriage (20) being free to move up along the post (12). The carriage (20) is prevented from moving down the post (12) by means of a stop or restraint (12.60,12.50,12.40,12.30) which is separate from and underneath the carriage (20) and which the carriage (20) abuts, with the stop or restraint (12.60,12.50,12.40,12.30) being located on the post (12). The carriage (20) is not otherwise restrained from moving up the post except by the curved channels through the carriage (20) which engage the extremities of the post, and the friction this may produce. Further systems are provided with the same features but additionally additional frictional or other forces such as shearing forces, produced by means of formations or fixtures to the post or the carriage which must be overcome after the carriage starts moving relative to the post, such as restraints or stops on the post above the carriage. In other embodiments additional frictional or shear forces must be overcome before movement between the carriage (20) and the post (12) will occur. The movement of the carriage (2) on the post (12) is guided by formations on the carriage (20) cooperating with the mating formations on the post (12).

Abstract: A roadway guardrail system including a rail and plurality of support posts assembled such that upon impact from a vehicle the rail moves upwardly with respect to the post. Fasteners may be used in the operative coupling of the rail to the support posts, such that upon impact the fasteners move upwardly with respect to the support posts and the rail moves upwardly along with the fasteners. The guardrail system may further include a reinforcing member that is slidable along the post and operatively coupled to the rail with the fasteners, such that the rail and fasteners slide along with the reinforcing member with respect to the support posts. The reinforcing member may be a spacer of various shapes, a washer, an additional rail section, or other type of member that allows the rail to slide upwardly with respect to the post.

Abstract: A highway guardrail terminal having horizontally extending guardrail elements mounted on a plurality of vertical posts. An anchor cable release mechanism having a cable release bracket attached to a W-beam rail element by cable release bolts has an arrangement of tapered slots and elongated openings to quickly release the cable release bracket from the W-beam rail element upon end-on vehicular impact to the terminal. The tapered slots have a geometry which lifts the bracket away from and out of a parallel alignment with the W-beam rail element.

Abstract: An ultra-high security guard rail system, particularly for use around buildings, works of art, public places, and so forth, includes coverings to disguise and/or beautify the barrier system. In terms of a typical construction, the system includes a plurality of vertical metal pipes, with a portion of each pipe being buried one or more feet below the ground surface, and a portion of the pipe remains exposed above ground. One or more horizontal metal pipes are interconnected to the vertical metal pipes. In the preferred embodiment, the pipes are made of steel, and one or more of the pipes may be filled with a fortifying material, such as cement. A cover may be provided to visually obscure the pipes. Such a cover may give the appearance of brick, cinder block, stone or wood. In addition, the system may include a floral decorative element.

Abstract: A metallic guardrail barrier comprises a sustaining post, a spacing member extending parallel to the ground, secured at one side to the sustaining post and carrying at the other side a supporting member to which the rail is secured. The rail supporting member is mounted on the spacing element so as to be swingable about a fulcrum parallel to the longitudinal direction of the rail and located at a level not coinciding with the level of the centerline of the rail. Shock absorbing mechanisms are provided to dampen the swinging movement of the supporting member around the fulcrum, following the impact of a vehicle against the rail, in a manner which is proportional to the intensity of the impact. The shock absorbing mechanisms comprise a pin or other suitable connecting or coupling element which connects the supporting member to the spacing element at a certain distance from the fulcrum and which is adapted to tear or rupture an area weakened by holes which are located on the supporting member and/or spacing element.
