Abstract: Techniques and examples of efficient detection of a transmission session in New Radio unlicensed spectrum (NR-U) are described. An apparatus (e.g., user equipment (UE)) detects presence of an indication from a base station of a wireless network in an NR-U. The apparatus determines that a transmission opportunity (TXOP) follows the indication responsive to the detecting. The apparatus then receives a downlink (DL) transmission in the NR-U from the base station during the TXOP.

Abstract: Techniques and examples of design for initial access in New Radio (NR) unlicensed spectrum (NR-U) are described. An apparatus receives from a base station of a wireless network which transmits one or multiple synchronization signal and PBCH blocks (SS/PBCH blocks) whose indices are indicated in a cyclic-wrapped order subject to a result of listen-before-talk (LBT) in NR-U. The apparatus also transmits a random access request on random access channel (RACH) resources allocated by the base station.

Abstract: An incremental scheduling scheme is proposed in a wireless communication system with beamforming. In an initial stage (stage-1), coarse scheduling plan is granted via control beam transmission. In a second stage (stage-2), fine scheduling plan is granted via dedicated beam transmission. Such incremental scheduling scheme provides load balancing for overhead channels on control/dedicated beams via stage-2 scheduling. It utilizes dedicated beam transmission that is more resource efficient and more UE-specific. Furthermore, it provides UE natural power-saving opportunities via stage-1 scheduling.

Abstract: A method of group-based beam reporting is proposed. The BS TX beams are grouped into groups to increase beam reporting efficiency. After measuring reference signals for beam management, UE reports RS quality to the network in beam groups. The beam grouping can be done either implicitly or explicitly. The grouping within the beam report is done by the UE with or without help from the network. According to principles of grouping mechanism, the grouping methods can be divided into two different categories. A first category is referred to as beam set based group, where UE groups TX beam information in a beam report based on its RX beam set(s). A second category is referred to as antenna group-based grouping, where UE groups TX beam information in a beam report based on UE antenna group.

Abstract: Apparatus and methods are provided for initial access in the multi-beam operation. In one novel aspect, the UE receives multiple response messages and selects one message as the response message. In one embodiment, the UE selects a subset of a configured UL resources, transmits a first message, wherein the first message is transmitted one or more times on each of the selected set of UL resources, receives one or more first-message-response messages from the BS, and selects one response message, wherein the selected response message indicates a corresponding BS RX resource, which is used by the UE for subsequent communication with the BS. In one embodiment, the selection of UL resources is at least based on transmitting spatial characteristics of the BS, the UE or both, which indicates whether the BS/UE is reciprocal, partial reciprocal or non-reciprocal.

Abstract: A beamforming system synchronization architecture is proposed to allow a receiving device to synchronize to a transmitting device in time, frequency, and spatial domain in the most challenging situation with very high pathloss. A periodically configured time-frequency resource blocks in which the transmitting device uses the same beamforming weights for its control beam transmission to the receiving device. A pilot signal for each of the control beams is transmitted in each of the periodically configured time-frequency resource blocks. The same synchronization signal can be used for all stages of synchronization including initial coarse synchronization, device and beam identification, and channel estimation for data demodulation.

Abstract: A method of providing channel station information in a beamforming system is proposed. Reference Signal (RS) is used for channel state estimation. For fine-resolution dedicated beam with smaller spatial coverage, additional channel monitoring of coarse-resolution beams for beam fallback is applied. The joint coverage of monitored fallback beams covers a desired service area. For beam administration, fallback beams need to be evaluated and the most preferable beam is selected for use in case the currently used dedicated beam is no longer suitable. For link adaptation, at least the channel state of the selected fallback beam is evaluated and provided to a scheduler (e.g., a BS) for adapting the transmission of the selected fallback beam.

Abstract: Mechanisms for wireless directional transmission systems are proposed. In a first novel aspect, a mechanism for reference signal provisioning and channel information reporting is proposed. Two sets of measurement pilots are introduced for initial access and control signaling. In a second novel aspect, a beamwidth adaptation mechanism is proposed to deal with occasional channel variation without requiring constantly high overhead due to measurement pilot transmission. In a third novel aspect, a mechanism for backhaul link to activate/deactivate efficiently is proposed. New states of activated state and deactivated state are introduced.
