Abstract: A system for storing data in which data is read out of and written into a large, addressable, bulk store by means of an immediate access store. An associative store is initially loaded with address information and upon a signal from a central processor unit, the address information is read out of the associative store to a test unit which calculates a desired address in the bulk store. The address is then applied to an address selection circuit which allows data to be read out of or written into a desired storage location in the bulk store.

Abstract: A data recording apparatus includes two magnetic recording heads which are spaced apart along the length of an exchangeable magnetic recording tape. A switch normally connects an input data device to the first recording head such that data is recorded in a normal fashion. When it has become necessary to exchange a new tape for an old one, the incoming data is switched to a store where it is held as the tapes are exchanged. When a new tape is ready to record data, the switch is returned to its normal position such that data in the store is recorded by the second recording head concurrently with incoming data being recorded by the first recording head. The heads are spaced apart by a distance such that stored data recorded by the second recording head does not overlap incoming data recorded by the first head.

Abstract: A character recognition system, in which the outputs of individual photocells of a matrix are grouped together, is disclosed, Each group of outputs is applied through a detector to produce a group of binary signals which signals are applied as an input to an encoding device. Each encoding device has an output for each possible input signal from an associated group of photocell outputs, each encoding device output being connected to access a different location in a store. Each photocell group output accesses a different store location, a weighting function being stored in each store location. The weighting functions of sets of store locations in a set are summed and compared with the sums of other sets of store locations in order to identify an unknown character displayed to the photocell matrix.

Abstract: Apparatus is disclosed for feeding documents. The apparatus includes a feed bed having an upper and a lower part connected by a step. Documents are fed along the feed bed from the upper part to the lower part. Positioned above the step is a holdback member which engages the top edge of the leading document on the upper part of the feed bed. Thus the combined action of the step and the holdback member is to allow a trickle feed of documents from the upper to the lower part to maintain a substantially constant number of document on the lower part.

Abstract: A system for high-speed scanning of graphical symbols in which a line is scanned by a first waveform at a first speed and upon the scan passing over the leading or trailing edge of a symbol, an output is developed and applied to a pulse generator. The pulse generator produces a substantially rectangular pulse whenever the scan passes a leading or trailing edge of a symbol portion, while the pulses are integrated by an appropriate amplifier. The integrated pulses form a second triangular-shaped waveform which is combined with the first scanning waveform such that the scan speed of the first waveform is temporarily reduced below normal scan speed and is temporarily increased above normal scan speed before reaching and remaining at a normal speed. The combined scanning waveform is then transmitted to a display device along with the first waveform and appropriate control signals such that the symbol scanned may be remotely displayed.

Abstract: A computer controlled circuit tester is provided for applying predetermined signals to, or taking signals from, individual ones of an array of pins to which the circuit to be tested is connected. Abstract: A connector for use with printed circuit boards is described. For use with boards having contacts arranged, for example, along an edge, the connector has a number of spaced apart flexible conductive rings supported on a common elastomeric core. The rings make contact with the board contacts and, through corresponding contacts of at least two boards, provide external interconnections between boards.
