Abstract:
A human food product comprises a higher ploidy strain of Fungi imperfecti of which each parent has a genetic growth constraint not shared by the other parent. One parent is for example auxotrophic for two compounds selected from histidine, arginine, leucine and adenine and the other for the other two. The nucleic acid content of the strain is preferably less than 2% by weight. The strain may be made by killing a higher ploidy strain of Fungi imperfecti and simultaneously reducing its nucleic acid content to below 2% by weight by treatment with water. The process may include preparing a higher ploidy strain of edible Fusarium by culturing two auxotrophs thereof together in a medium containing nutrients permitting both to grow and then culturing organisms derived from such culture in minimal medium. The invention is applicable to the production of human food by culturing the strain in conditions such that reversion or partial reversion to the haploid form(s) is minimised.
Abstract:
Optical communications apparatus for sending and receiving optical transmissions to and from a plurality of remote stations by a plurality of independent terminals which are multiplexed so that all operate through a single optical system for both transmission and reception of modulated beams containing encoded data.
Abstract:
An active transponder device comprises a CMOS integrated circuit including means for receiving an input signal including coded information, a memory for storing said information, and transmitter means for transmitting an output signal including said information, the input signal and the output signal being both low frequency induction communication signals.Normally, the output signal is emitted in response to an interrogation signal received via the receiving means, and is formed by modulation of that signal with said information after readout from the memory. The transponder operates inherently synchronously, using a single master clock signal which is generated either in an interrogation transmitter or in the programmer for injecting the coded information. The integrated circuit has a second receiving means used in the injection of the coded information. The injection of a clock-pulse which is in synchronism with the input signal enables the memory to receive the coded information. The transponder may be used for the identification of e.g. people or articles at the limits of a particular area e.g. a store.
Abstract:
A satellite communication system includes at least one base station, at least one satellite that can be brought into communication connection with the base station for data transmission, and a plurality of receivers adapted to receive signals transmitted from the satellite. The communication system is designed to transmit data in at least one uplink data stream from the base station to the satellite with a first data transmission rate and to transmit data in at least one downlink data stream from the satellite to the receivers with a second data transmission rate. The first data transmission rate is lower than the second data transmission rate and the satellite is provided with a data storage adapted to store the data transmitted from the base station to the satellite and to supply the data provided for the transmission to the receivers.
Abstract:
A suturing apparatus comprises a pair of jaws. A bendable needle housed in one of the jaws is adapted to carry a suture. An optional suture receiver may be disposed adjacent to the opposite jaw. A transition block curves the needle and directs it in a direction generally unparallel to an axis of the carrying jaw. The needle may also be configured to retrieve a suture. A retaining mechanism holds a suture in place to be engaged by the needle. The jaw housing the needle may include a lateral opening through which the suture may be inserted. The needle may also include a lateral notch which may be aligned with lateral opening to receive the suture. An actuator coupled to the needle enables the user to move the needle proximally to align the notch with the lateral slot.
Abstract:
A system and method for performing tissue therapy may include applying a reduced pressure to a tissue site of a patient. A fluid parameter associated with applying a reduced pressure to the tissue site may be sensed. An audible fluid leak location sound may be generated in response to sensing the fluid parameter. The audible fluid leak location sound may be altered in response to sensing that the fluid parameter changes. By altering the audible fluid leak location sound in response to sensing a change of the fluid parameter, a clinician may detect location of a fluid leak at the drape by applying force to the drape. The force applied to the drape may be a clinician pressing a finger onto an edge of the drape.
Abstract:
A reduced pressure treatment system is provided that includes a canister that is fluidly connected to a tissue site and is configured to receive fluid drawn from the tissue site under the influence of a reduced pressure. A reduced pressure source provides the reduced pressure and is fluidly connected to the tissue site by a fluid communication path, which may include a source conduit, the canister, and a target conduit. A sensing device communicates with the source conduit and is configured to sense a pressure in the source conduit. A valve communicates with the source conduit and is configured to vent the reduced pressure. A processing unit communicates with the sensing device and the valve and is configured to open the valve for a selected amount of time, determine a decay of reduced pressure, and determine a fill status of the canister based on the decay of reduced pressure.

Abstract:
A manually actuated breast pump is provided. The breast pump has a breast cup, pump mechanism and a container. The components of the breast pump are easily assembled and disassembled to facilitate use, cleaning, manufacture and transport. The breast pump can apply a negative pressure, a positive pressure or both to a user's breast. The breast pump provides fluid isolation between the pressure source and the expressed milk.
Abstract:
A breast cup for use with a breast pump for expressing breast milk is provided. The breast cup sealingly separates the air flow from the breast milk, provides a barrier against impingement of the flexible insert by the user's breast and provides a massaging member for facilitating expression of the breast milk.
