Abstract:
The invention teaches associating a first image comprising pixels with a first palette such that that the first image is viewable, whereby associating the image with a second palette results in a change to the first image that may or may not be viewable in a graphical information system. It is emphasized that this abstract is provided to comply with the rules requiring an abstract that will allow a searcher or other reader to quickly ascertain the subject matter of the technical disclosure. It is submitted with the understanding that it will not be used to interpret or limit the scope or meaning of the claims. 37 CFR 1.72(b).
Abstract:
A intelligent label comprising a radio frequency transponder coupled to a global positioning system, both of which are attached to a substrate. Once the intelligent label is attached to an object, it will enable the object to be tracked as it moves from one point to another point. As the object moves, the global positioning system receives signals from GPS satellites and processes those signals into location data. The data is then either transmitted directly to an interrogation station by the radio frequency transponder, or stored in a memory. The memory serves to allow all or part of the previous location data to be stored for transmittal to an interrogator at a later date.
Abstract:
Speech recognition and natural language parsing components are used to extract the meaning of the user's spoken input. The system stores a semantic representation of an electronic activity guide, and the contents of the guide can be mapped into the grammars used by the natural language parser. Thus, when the user wishes to navigate through the complex menu structure of the electronic activity guide, he or she only needs to speak in natural language sentences. The system automatically filters the contents of the guide and supplies the user with on-screen display or synthesized speech responses to the user's request. The system allows the user to communicate in a natural way with a variety of devices communicating with the home network or home gateway.
Abstract:
A freestanding fireplace hearth includes an artificial log set, a snuffer and a fuel tray beneath the snuffer and log set. When refilling is necessary, a drawer containing the fuel tray is pulled out for access, the tray descending away from the snuffer as it is pulled laterally outward. After filling, the drawer is pushed in and the fuel tray moves laterally under, and then upwardly into operative position with respect to, the snuffer. The snuffer can be opened to allow vaporized fuel to ascend into the log set. When lit, an attractive dancing flame is displayed. When the snuffer is closed, fuel vapor flow through the log set closes and the fire is extinguished. Details of tray, drawer, snuffer and hearth construction are disclosed.
Abstract:
Fertility in a plant is controlled by inactivating a gene critical to fertility, and inserting into the plant the criticial gene linked to an inducible promoter.
Abstract:
An inducible promoter is used to regulate expression of a gene which is known to be critical to male fertility. The selected gene's control sequences are modified so that it is normally "off" and as a result the plants are male sterile. When it is desired to reproduce the male sterile plants, male fertility is restored by treating the plants with a non-phytotoxic chemical which induces expression of the critical gene. A critical gene is one which affects flavonol production and in particular compounds of the formula: ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3, R.sub.4, R.sub.5, R.sub.7, and R.sub.8, are hydrogen, hydroxyl or alkoxy having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms. Particularly preferred flavonols include galangin, kaempferol, iso-rhamnetin, quercetin and morin.
Abstract:
A compact sign is disclosed in which alternative messages are displayed, such as "OPEN" or "CLOSED". The signs use certain of the letters in each of the messages, for example "O" and "E" in the OPEN-CLOSED embodiment. The signs have three panels: a front panel with an aperture through which the other two panels may be viewed; a middle panel having one or more one space apertures through which information on the back panel may be viewed, as well as either blank spaces or information in other spaces; and a back panel with either blank spaces or information. The middle panel slides one space to reveal the alternate message.
