Image flicker can be prevented by applying vertical image compression to the entrance screen of a television pick-up tube in a X-ray imaging system. To this end, an X-ray imaging system is provided with an anamorphic optical system. The compressed image is displayed on a television monitor in the correct proportions when the image detection face, scanned by the electron beam, in the television pick-up tube is adapted in conformity with the image compression.

A light distributor for an x-ray diagnostics installation has mirror-symmetrically disposed sets of light exit ports at a housing, which are adapted for connection to various different image recording components. Inside the housing, a mirror system is provided which can be arranged in a first position or a second position. When the system is arranged in the first position, light is directed from an input port of the light distributor to a first of the sets of light exit ports in the housing. When the mirror system is arranged in the second position, light from the input port is directed to a second of the sets of light exit ports. The mirror system can be changed between the first and second positions by a simple manual operation, using the same mirrors and the same mirror mounts, which are interchangeably accepted in a single set of mounting locations in the housing.

An x-ray diagnostics installation having an image intensifier video chain which back-projects a region of primary medical interest within an x-ray image into the overall video image is provided with fiber optics and opto-electronic transducers which are actuated by a switching bank in accordance with the desired shape and position of the region of primary interest. The transducers and switching arrangment can be removed, so that the output image from the x-ray image intensifier can be viewed at the output side of the fiber optics.

The apparatus includes circuitry for digitization of the video signals from an image intensifier-TV chain, digital subtraction to obtain digital difference signals, and subsequent reconversion of the resultant digital difference video signals to analog signals. Pulsed X-ray exposures are performed during the blanking periods of the TV camera following which the television fields immediately following the pulsed X-ray exposure are scanned and read out, and are supplied to the processor for performing the digital X-ray subtraction.

In a digital intravenous subtraction angiography system an X-ray generator provides low mA continuous X-ray exposures illuminating a standard image intensifier producing an image scanned by a conventional television camera to provide a video signal. An analog-to-digital converter converts the video signal into digital form. The digital frame signals are added together in real time to provide an intermediate digital signal representing the addition of typically 5 to 20 frames. A digital disk receives and stores the intermediate image signals. A subsequent intermediate image signal is added to a second memory while a previously formed intermediate image signal is transferred from a first memory to disk storage. The first and second memories are operated in "ping pong" fashion so that each and every video frame signal during the acquisition period, typically 15 seconds, is summed to form one of the intermediate images. A selected mask image signal is subtracted from any or all intermediate image signals to provide an enhanced subtracted image signal. Various mask image signals may be subtracted so that the operator may decide by visual inspection of the subtracted image signals which mask image signal minimizes misregistration artifacts. Each intermediate image signal or each subtraction intermediate image signal is weighted approximately proportional to the contrast agent intensity to form a weighted sum signal. The operator may exclude from this combining process any intermediate signal which the operator has determined is not suitably registered. An intermediate image signal may be processed to provide a phantom image signal through translation and/or rotation of the intermediate image signal.
