    Abstract: Electric motors and drive circuits therefor are described herein. The drive circuit is configured to operate in a first mode of operation and a second mode of operation. The drive circuit includes an inverter configured to regulate current to a first winding and a second winding of the electric motor in the first mode of operation and to only the first winding in the second mode of operation. The drive circuit also includes a first switch coupled to the second winding and configured to supply line frequency current to the second winding at a first node in the second mode of operation, and a second switch coupled to the second winding and configured to enable selection of regulating current to the second winding using the inverter in the first mode of operation or supplying the line frequency current directly to the second winding in the second mode of operation.

    Abstract: A thyristor starter accelerates a synchronous machine from a stop state to a predetermined rotation speed by sequentially performing a first mode of performing commutation of an inverter by intermittently setting DC output current of a converter to zero and a second mode of performing commutation of the inverter by induced voltage of the synchronous machine. In the thyristor starter, during a first time period from start of performance of the second mode to arrival of the induced voltage of the synchronous machine at a first voltage value, a phase control angle of the inverter is changed such that a value thereof becomes larger as a rotation speed of the synchronous machine becomes higher.

The method further includes measuring an input current (Ii) of the inverter.     Abstract: Technical solutions are described for inverter commutation techniques for five-phase synchronous motor drives. An example method for five-phase motor control of a five-phase motor in a steering system includes receiving, by a processing device, a commanded modulation index mi, a phase advance angle δ, and a measured position θm. The method further includes generating, by the processing device, five duty cycles for each phase of the five-phase motor based at least in part on the commanded modulation index mi, the phase advance angle δ, and the measured position θm. Each of the duty cycles includes a fundamental component and an injected harmonic component. The method further includes performing, by the processing device, a pulse width modulation technique on each of the five duty cycles to generate on-times for a plurality of switches in phase legs of an inverter.

    Abstract: Technical solutions are described for applying machine current limiting in permanent magnet synchronous motors. An example system includes a PMSM and a motor control system. The motor control system is configured to receive a torque command and determine whether the torque command can be satisfied based on a given voltage and a given maximum motor current limit. The motor control system is further configured to, responsive to determining that the torque command can be satisfied, determine a minimum current that satisfies the torque command. The motor control system is further configured to send the minimum current as a minimum current command to the PMSM.

    Abstract: A motor control integrated circuit according to embodiments outputs predetermined PWM signals to an inverter circuit that drives a synchronous motor and is configured to perform on-off control on a plurality of three-phase bridge connected switching elements in accordance with the PWM signals to convert direct current into three-phase alternating current, and includes: a PWM generation unit configured to generate the signals based on a received speed command value and output the PWM signals; and a current detection unit configured to detect differential values of phase currents at a predetermined time point that is fixed within a period of a carrier wave used for PWM control, based on the carrier wave and a signal generated by a current detector for detecting current conducted to the synchronous motor, wherein the PWM generation unit calculates a speed of the synchronous motor based on the differential values and then, based on the speed, generates the PWM signals to be applied to the synchronous motor.
