Abstract: The angle of departure (AOD) of directed beams, e.g., beamformed beams, transmitted by one or more base stations, such as a gNB, and the angle of arrival (AOA) of the directed beams received by a UE may be used to improve positioning accuracy by identifying Line Of Sight (LOS) beams and multi-path beams. The differential AOA (DAOA) of a directed beam pair may compared to the differential AOD (DAOD) of the directed beam pair. Matching DAOA and DAOD may be used as an indication that the directed beams in the beam pair are LOS with the UE, whereas a mis-match indicates one or both of the directed beams are multi-path. The location of the UE may be estimated using the measurement information, e.g., AOA, RTT, RSTD, etc., obtained from LOS directed beams.

Abstract: Methods and techniques are described for supporting location services for a user equipment (UE) in a Fifth Generation wireless network in which a base station, such as a gNB or ng-eNB, broadcasts a Positioning Reference Signal (PRS) in a plurality of different directions and at a plurality of different times. A PRS muting configuration is used in which PRS is muted using a time based and angle based pattern to prevent interference between beams transmitted by other base stations and/or to prevent interference between beams transmitted simultaneously by a single base station. The time based and angle based muting pattern, for example, may provide an indication for each direction in the plurality of different directions and for each time in the plurality of different times and as to whether the PRS is transmitted or muted by the base station.

Abstract: Disclosed are methods for aiding a mobile device in the acquisition of positioning reference signals (PRSs) transmitted in a cellular network in support of OTDOA positioning. In one implementation, a mobile device receives an offset parameter from a location server indicative of a difference in timing between transmission of a first PRS positioning occasion for a reference cell and transmission of a second PRS positioning occasion for a neighboring cell that supports multiple PRS configurations, where the second PRS positioning occasion is for a PRS configuration with a longest periodicity. The mobile device may determine an expected timing of PRS positioning occasions for other PRS configurations for the neighboring cell based on the offset parameter and may measure a Reference Signal Time Difference for the neighboring cell using the expected timing.

Abstract: Disclosed are techniques for determining a distance (or range) between a first wireless entity and a second wireless entity. In an aspect, the first wireless entity transmits a first positioning reference signaling (PRS) signal to the second wireless entity at a first time, where the first PRS signal is received by the second wireless entity at a second time, and receives a second PRS signal from the second wireless entity at a third time, where the second PRS signal is transmitted by the second wireless entity at a fourth time. The first wireless entity enables the distance to be determined by a location computing entity, for example, by a location server, based on the first, second, third, and fourth times. The first wireless entity may be a mobile device or a base station and the second wireless entity may be the other of the mobile device or base station.

Abstract: Disclosed are techniques for determining a location of a user equipment (UE) communicating over a shared communication medium in unlicensed spectrum. In an aspect, the UE measures a positioning reference signal (PRS) from a first evolved NodeB (eNB) for a first secondary cell (Scell) and a second PRS from a second eNB for a second Scell. The UE reports the first and second PRS measurements and the first and second PRS measurement times to a location server. In an aspect, the first and second PRS are configured according to a common PRS configuration. The location server also receives transmission times of the PRS signals from the first and second eNBs. Using the measurement and transmission times, the location server can associate the first PRS measurement to the first eNB and the second PRS measurement to the second eNB, thereby assisting the location server to obtain a location for the UE.

Abstract: Many mobile devices and mobile networks utilize orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) to calculate position information of mobile devices within the network. However, the Doppler Effect and other noise or obstructions can cause OFDM signals to become entangled, particularly when the mobile device is moving, making the calculated position information inaccurate. Described herein are systems and methods for disentangling the OFDM signals by calculating a symbol length for the signals that is longer than the minimum symbol length, which is used in traditional OFDM. Selecting a longer symbol length reduces the Doppler Effect and other noise on the signals, making positioning calculations more accurate.

Abstract: Angle of arrival (AOA) and differential AOA (DAOA) positioning for a user equipment (UE) is enhanced by using the UE's inertial sensors to track UE motion and change in angular UE orientation. UE location may be computed, by the UE or a location server, using triangulation for AOA measurements relative to a global reference frame or using multilateration for DAOA measurements. The computed UE location may remain accurate even when the UE is moving while obtaining measurements. The UE can also use AOA and DAOA measurements using 3D angles to increase accuracy when the UE and measured base stations are not in the same horizontal plane. 3D angles can also be used to identify whether the UE is close to a serving base station to improve accuracy further. Various non-AOA measurements may also be used to supplement AOA and DAOA measurements.

Abstract: Techniques for supporting positioning for a terminal (sometimes referred to herein as a target device) in a wireless network are described. In an aspect, positioning for a target device includes transmitting a Request Assistance Data message to a location server, the Request Assistance Data message indicating at least one positioning method from a plurality of supported positioning methods. The Request Assistance Data message comprises common parameters that are applicable to all positioning methods indicated in the Request Assistance Data message. The common parameters comprise a serving cell identifier. Positioning for the target device further includes receiving assistance data sent in response to the Request Assistance Data message, and performing positioning based on the received assistance data.
