摘要: Electroexpansive material such as a stack of piezoelectric discs is employed as a driver for an undamped spring-mass system, such as a lever for motion multiplication. A displacement, step or other motion, is obtained without residual motion by controlling the voltage excitation time, such as the period of a square wave voltage pulse to the natural period of the system or the period of the ramp of a step voltage to the natural period of the system. A high-speed printer exemplifies application of such controlled excitation and the advantage of controlling the pulse period. Various forms are disclosed for the lever.

摘要: An improved sensing transducer for use in a security device to protect objects from unauthorized removal is designed to sense both increases and decreases in pressure and to provide an output signal indicating that a pressure change has occurred. The sensing transducer includes a piezoelectric element and an actuator for transmitting pressure to the piezoelectric element to provide two different types of stress in the element. When an increase or decrease in pressure occurs, the piezoelectric element produces an output signal to indicate a change in pressure.

摘要: Apparatus is disclosed for doing useful work with electroexpansive material which expands volumetrically in response to an electric field. The material is disposed in a chamber of a fixed volume slightly greater than the volume of the material at rest. The volume intermediate the material and the chamber is filled with a fluid having good insulation properties. When the material expands in response to an electrical signal, insulating fluid is forced out of a passage in a wall of the chamber and performs work by actuating a plunger or diaphragm. Means, such as an intermediate piston, may be employed to isolate the insulating fluid from the hydraulic fluid in a device being thus hydraulically driven, such as a pump valving means or fluid control valve.

摘要: This application discloses a detector for leaks which generate ultrasonic waves, such as illuminating gas leaks, and electrical leaks of the corona or arcing types. An ultrasonic detector is utilized to respond to the ultrasonic waves generated by the turbulence in the atmosphere caused by such leaks, and the electrical signals generated by the ultrasonic transducer are utilized to produce an indication of the presence of the leak, either an audible or visual indication. This application also discloses a band-pass ultrasonic interstage coupler employing piezoelectric elements, and a combination local oscillator and band-pass interstage ultrasonic wave coupler employing piezoelectric elements.
