Particularly a narrow width ultra-violet light source and corresponding ultra-violet and photomultiplier unit, as well as associated circuitry for shaping and counting electrical pulses, corresponding to the diameter of the pinhole defects. The system distinguishes from the prior art in that it makes possible the detection of holes in a material having a large density of holes as well as discriminating as to the number of given defects in several different sizes or threshold categories.

    摘要: Method and apparatus for inspecting the surface of a workpiece for the presence of burrs. A focused laser beam is swept across the surface of the workpiece while a photodetector positioned at an acute angle to the workpiece surface senses reflections produced by the beam. The photodetector, when positioned in the plane swept by the beam, observes reflections from the tip of the burr and from the portion of the path on the surface which is not obscured by the burr. The length of the path portion from which reflections are obscured by the burr is directly proportional to the height of the burr. Suitable logic and measuring networks calibrated to the sweep velocity on the workpiece and triggered by the reflections are capable of determining the length of the obscured portion and therefore the height of the burr.

    摘要: Apparatus for the inspection of glass containers to detect cracks, voids, bubbles or other flaws has a rotary testing unit which carries one or more photoelectric detectors whose receivers transmit signals to one or more amplifiers on the testing unit in response to detection of flaws. The light supplying means of the detectors receive light from a light source which is stationary or shares the movements of the testing unit and such light supplying means include bars and/or fiber bundles of light conducting materials which conduct light from the light source and direct it against the selected portion or portions of the container which is to be inspected. The testing unit is movable axially toward and away from the container. The amplifiers receive current by way of a first slip ring on the testing unit, and the amplified signals are transmitted to an ejector for defective containers by way of a second slip ring.

    摘要: This disclosure describes an optical spatial filtering technique for detecting hole-type defects and excess spot defects in photomasks used in making microcircuits. An approximate form factor intensity filter provides suppression of the regularly shaped mask features. For masks with features whose boundaries are along only the X-Y direction, this filter advantageously is a cross placed in the transform plane. With rectangular features suppressed, only nonrectangular defect data passes. Spots as small as 0.1 mil are detected and displayed on a TV monitor; or, using a photomultiplier tube, signals are stored on an oscilloscope or by a recorder for analysis, or counted with a pulse counter. Masks or circuits on opaque substrates are also inspected by this method.

    摘要: The invention relates to a process for optical detecting fluctuations in level in magnetizable layers of recording materials, wherein a beam of electromagnetic waves is made to fall on the moving magnetizable layer and the intensity of the scattered radiation emitted is measured. The variations in the structure of the magnetizable layers reach the surface and thus alter the optical behavior of the magnetizable layer. The process is suitable for continuous checking of magnetizable tapes during the manufacturing process.
