Methods and apparatus of the present invention provide for orthopaedic total replacement of the hip while substantially preserving muscles and soft tissues around the hip joint resulting in reduced healing time and decreased risk of dislocation following the procedure. In an exemplary embodiment, the acetabulum is prepared and fitted with a prosthetic acetabular cup 702 and a prosthetic femoral head 1102 is fitted into the prosthetic acetabular cup 702. An intramedullary rod 1502 is inserted longitudinally into the femur. A prosthetic femoral neck 3102 is then inserted from a point along the side of the patient's body and into the side of the femur and through a pre-existing lateral bore in the intramedullary rod 1502 and through the remainder of the femur to join the prosthetic femoral head 1102. The methods and apparatus include structures and techniques for fixing the prosthetic femoral neck 3102 in relation to the intramedullary rod 1502.

A prosthetic hip-joint includes: a. a prosthetic acetabulum cup for implantation into a pelvis; b. a prosthetic femoral assembly which includes: i. a ball-shaped femoral head that during implantation becomes located within the cup; and ii. a femoral stem that is fixed at a first end to the head, and that has a second end distal from the first end which is adapted for implant into a medullary canal of a femur, and c. a liner assembly adapted to he secured to the cup and is also adapted to receive and to constrain the head against dislocation. In one aspect the hip-joint permits the head to rotate through an angle which exceeds at least 153 degrees while concurrently constraining the head against dislocation. In another aspect the hip joint constrains the head a dislocation by a preestablished amount of force which is adjustable during implantation thereof.

An acetabular inserter (10) aids a surgeon in controlling the installation of an acetabular cup prosthesis (11) having a central, female aperture (13). The inserter includes an inserter head (20), a housing (12) and a locking mechanism. The housing (12) is attached to the inserter head, the housing enclosing a drive train (14) having, at a far end (134), a prosthesis engaging thread (124), and at the opposite end (42′), a handle (20) which facilitates turning of the drive train by the operator. The locking mechanism is associated with the housing which selectively locks the drive train, and thus the prosthesis, in position. The opposite end (42′) of the drive train has a latch device which enables quick removal from the housing for cleaning and sterilization.

Disclosed apparatus and methods confirm the depth of insertion of an acetabular component in the course of a total Mp replacement using a graduated shaft through a cannulated holder. Embodiments are disclosed including a version integrated into existing instrumentation, and an alternative, disposable version, one per case. All of embodiments confirm appropriate seating of the acetabular component against the inner wall of the acetabulum. Given the hemispherical reaming that is done during acetabular preparation, this would allow for maximal contact between the prosthesis and the host bone.

A modular hip implant is disclosed that includes a base member that is to be attached to a pelvic bone, and a cup for accommodating a hip joint prosthesis. The base member is provided with fasteners for mounting the base member on the pelvic bone as well as a concave accommodation portion for the cup. The cup has a convex outer shape which is complementary to the accommodation portion such that the radii of curvature determining the concave accommodation portion and the convex outer form essentially correspond to each other and the cup can be attached within the base member. The base member and/or the cup include adjustment means for adjusting the position of the cup relative to the base member. The invention allows the inclination and anteversion to be adjusted by arranging the cup in the base.

An artificial hip joint is provided including a generally hemispherical acetabular cup with a generally hemispherical liner mated within the acetabular cup and with a locking ring to secure the liner within the acetabular cup. The acetabular cup is adapted to be secured within a hip bone. The liner includes a hemispherical inside surface for pivotably supporting a head at an upper end of a femur. The locking ring resides within an annular groove in the acetabular cup and an annular seat in the liner. The locking ring includes a captured end and a free end. The captured end includes a slot which cooperates with a post in the acetabular cup to slidably hold the captured end to the acetabular cup. The locking ring removably attaches the liner to the acetabular cup.
