A prescription drug printing machine is used by a physician in connection with prescribing one or more prescription drugs to a patient. The printing machine has a memory unit that contains a database of information on all known available prescription drugs, including a colored pictorial representation of each of the available drugs. Each of the colored pictorial representations is a substantially similar replica of the drug it depicts. Preferably, the colored pictorial representation is an exact replica of the actual drug, containing the drug's exact color, shape and size. The printing device includes a first and second printing means for printing a prescription drug form and a patient receipt, respectively. Both of the prescription drug form and the patient receipt include the name of the drug, a colored pictorial representation, and other information. The prescribing physician inspects each of these documents for accuracy before handing them both over to the patient. Patients remit their prescription drug form to a pharmacist and retain the patient receipt for comparison with drugs that are prepared for them by the pharmacist. The printing machine has storage means for storing information concerning the prescription drug form in the memory unit of the printer, in order to keep accurate patient records. The printing device optionally includes translating means for translating the prescription drug information into a foreign language.

Transport mechanisms are provided to move the mask plate (40) in a direction substantially perpendicular to said paper passage between a first position on the print head side and a second position on the platen side, the transport mechanisms being responsive to the position of the print head along the platen. In the first position of the mask plate a relatively wide gap between the platen and the mask plate enables easy paper insertion, while in the second position a relatively wide gap between the mask plate and the print head facilitates replacement of the ink ribbon without problems.

As the wheel is brought into pressing engagement with sheets while rotating, images of characters or symbols are formed on the sheets in the form of a pattern formed from a combination of the small balls. The trouble of noise production when printing is carried out can be eliminated because the sheets are brought into pressing engagement with the surface of the wheel while the wheel is rotating.

The elements have a predetermined arrangement so that: (1) in each column and row there is at least one element, and (2) there are no elements in adjoining row positions whereby there is no interference between the elements in response to simultaneous activation of any pair of the elements. A printer is disclosed for use in printing indicia or the like on a sheet of recording medium by selective application of impulses of fluid. The printer comprises a sheet support mechanism, a print head, fluid supply means, a valve assembly, and an input system. The support mechanism supports and selectively advances the sheet of recording medium. The print head includes a one- or two-dimensional array of tubes arranged to form a dot matrix for printing alphanumeric characters on the sheet. It may extend the width of the recording medium or be movable across it. Connected to these tubes are the fluid supply means and a valve assembly that includes a separate valve for each tube for controlling the supply of fluid thereto. In one embodiment of the invention, a heater raises the temperature of the fluid passing through the tubes enough that printing takes place on the recording medium whenever the fluid is ejected from the tubes. In another embodiment, a movable pin is mounted at the distal end of each tube in such a fashion that it is driven into the recording medium when a valve is opened. In still another embodiment the movable pins are also heated enough that they affect the recording medium where they are driven into it. The input system opens and closes the valves in accordance with input signals, such that the impulses of fluid applied to the tubes produce detectable visual changes on the recording medium which represent such input signals.

A printout device for calculators and the like includes a plurality of print segments, each encased in elastomer and embedded in a rigid block with the lower, indicia forming ends flush with the lower surface of the block. The upper end of each print segment is provided with a diametrically extending slot. Disposed above each print segment and axially aligned therewith is an electromagnetic driver element which is provided with a diametrically extending bar or key projecting from the lower surface thereof. With the electromagnet unactuated, downward pressure applied to the upper surface of the block will drive the key into the aligned slot so that no force will be transmitted to the printing segment. Actuation of the electromagnet will cause the key to be attracted to the upper extremities of the printing segment as it approaches it, causing the key to misalign with the slot and impinge on the upper surface of the printing segment. The force thus transferred drives the segment to print on a printing surface subjacent to the block.
