A base station sends control information and data to a user equipment (UE) and receives ACK information from the UE. The base station performs detection for the ACK information based on (i) a first hypothesis for the control information being missed by the UE and (ii) a second hypothesis for the control information being received correctly by the UE. In one design, the ACK information may have a variable size, and the base station may perform detection for the ACK information based on different block codes for the first and second hypotheses. In another design, the ACK information may have a fixed size, and the base station may perform detection for the ACK information based on a single block code and obtain a fixed number of bits for the ACK information for both hypotheses.

A technique for encoding a signal used in a digital communication system in which individual traffic channel data rates may be adapted to specific channel conditions. In particular, a forward error correction coding rate is adapted for individual channels while at the same time maintaining a fixed block size independent of the FEC coding rate. This allows the system data rate to adapt to the channel conditions experienced by a specific user. Thus, users experiencing good communication conditions with low multipath distortion may be allocated higher capacity, whereas users with significant multipath distortion may make use of lower rate (higher levels of coding) error codes to maintain high quality. Messages are sent from a transmitter to a receiver to inform the receiver of the coding rate implemented at any given point in time. These parameters may be adjusted independent of transmitted power level through the expedient of ensuring that size of a transmitted frame remains constant, while permitting the ability to change FEC coding rates and FEC block sizes.

The relay station may transmit control information during part of the subframe. The base station may transmit data to the relay station during the remaining part of the subframe. In another aspect, a target termination for a packet may be selected based on data and/or ACK transmission opportunities available for the packet. One or more transmissions of the packet may be sent with HARQ, and ACK information may be sent for the packet. The packet may be transmitted such that it can be terminated prior to the first subframe (i) not available for sending the packet or (ii) available for sending ACK information.

A wireless communication system implementing Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (OFDMA) can implement a fractional frequency reuse plan where a portion of carriers is allocated for terminals not anticipating handoff and another portion of the carriers is reserved for terminals having a higher probability of handoff. Each of the portions can define a reuse set. The terminals can be constrained to frequency hop within a reuse set. The terminal can also be configured to determine a reuse set based on a present assignment of a subset of carriers. The terminal can determine a channel estimate and a channel quality indicator based in part on at least the present reuse set. The terminal can report the channel quality indicator to a source, which can determine a rate based on the index value.

When multiplexing is performed according to the solutions of the present invention, all optical signals are multiplexed into one optical signal based on polarization multiplexing, optical paths traveled by different optical signals differ slightly, and the optical power and the optical field energy distribution differ slightly between different optical signals in the finally multiplexed optical signal.

Normalized deviations of the operational statistics are determined and compared to the threshold deviations. A diagnosis zone corresponding to a problem signature is determined based on the normalized deviations by determining that coordinates of the normalized deviations are within the diagnosis zone, comparing a ratio based on the normalized deviations to a threshold ratio, or comparing a differential of the normalized deviations to a threshold differential. A satellite terminal is diagnosed with a problem defined by the problem signature based on the determined diagnosis zone.

More specifically, the control system is configured to detect possible EMI conditions and adjust parameters within the computing device to mitigate such EMI. In this manner, the computing device includes an aggressor application and a victim receiver. The control system is configured to analyze performance tradeoffs based on an acceptable performance level of the aggressor application and the performance degradation experienced by the victim receiver. Based on such analysis, the control system is configured to adjust parameters associated with the aggressor application to mitigate the EMI. Thus, the control system provides designers with an additional tool that may reduce the performance degradation of the victim receiver attributable to the EMI.

A technique for wear-leveling of caches addresses unbalanced write traffic on cache lines which cause heavily written cache lines to fail much fast than other lines in the cache. A counter is incremented for each write operation to a cache array. A line affected by a current write operation which caused the counter to meet a threshold is evicted from the cache rather than writing data to the affected line. A dynamic adjustment of the threshold can be made depending on the operating program. Updates to a current replacement policy pointer are stopped due to the counter meeting the threshold.
