A plasma display having a transparent front panel spaced from a back panel which is a metal core having layers of a dielectric material extending over and bonded to the core. Conductive electrodes are on the surface of or imbedded in the dielectric layer of the back panel. The materials of which the back panel is made are chosen to form a back panel having a thermal coefficient of expansion compatible with that of the front panel. The dielectric material is made from a green ceramic tape which is bonded to the core and cofired with the core to form the back panel. Barrier ribs are formed on the back panel by embossing or scribing the green tape before cofiring the bonded assembly. Slight differences in the TCEs of the front and back panels may be compensated for by heating the panel having the lower TCE to a temperature hotter than the panel having the lower TCE during the frit seal process. Alternatively, the materials for the dielectric may be chosen such that the composite TCE of the cofired assembly matches the TCE of the front panel.

A method for driving a matrix type of plasma display panel is capable of stably displaying an image in error-discharge free. The plasma display panel including a plurality of row electrodes extending parallel to each other, two adjacent ones of the row electrodes being paired, and a plurality of column electrodes extending perpendicularly to the row electrodes at a given intervals wherein a region in which, one pair of row electrodes and one column electrode are crossed and spaced with a distance to each other at an intersection corresponding to one pixel. The method includes the steps of: applying first resetting pulses to all of the row electrodes simultaneously to cause discharges between all of the pairs of row electrodes, each first resetting pulse including a pulse rise or pulse fall time longer than each duration of the sustain pulse for sustaining a discharge emission as a simultaneous resetting step; applying a second resetting pulse to one of the pair of row electrodes to cause discharge therebetween immediately after applying the first resetting pulse to the one of the pair of row electrodes; applying a scan pulse to every pair of row electrodes and simultaneously applying a pixel data pulse to every column electrode to write pixel data to the associated pixels in accordance with pixel data pulses applied; and applying a series of sustain pulses alternately to one of the row electrode pair and the other thereof to maintain sustain-discharge between the pair of row electrodes.

A method of fabricating a display panel on a substrate material of soda-lime float glass. A dielectric layer composed of a mixture of lead, silicon and aluminum is deposited on the substrate to a thickness of from 25 to 150 microns. A masking pattern is defined on the surface of the dielectric layer where plasma display cavities are to be formed. Openings are etched in the dielectric layer with fluoboric acid to geometries no larger than approximately 0.15 mm wide by 0.15 mm thick at regions defined by the masking pattern, the openings extending to the major surface of the substrate and forming a plasma display cavity. A cover is provided over the cavity to form an enclosed envelope containing a noble gas. A phosphor is provided in the plasma display cavity together with electrodes adjacent to the cavity for ionizing the gas and exciting the phosphor.

Abnormal charges may accumulate to a significant extent at the ends of the shift channels having write discharge cells and shift discharge cells regularly arranged. A self shift type gas discharge panel has a display screen with a plurality of shift lines in the vertical direction, and a new driving system is provided for the panel. The display screen is divided horizontally into two areas, an upper part having display rows and a lower part having monitor rows, and these monitor and display rows are configured to allow independent shift operation. Thus, relevant data is written from underneath into the bottom monitor row by a one-data-input-and-refresh method, and when the writing into this monitor row is completed, the data in this single row is scrolled up into the display rows. The configuration makes it possible to write data into a desired position in the monitor rows and to amend easily the data already written, resulting in improved operability.

The present invention relates to a plasma display panel comprising two substrates defining a gap in which an ionizable gas is disposed. On at least one of the substrates there are a plurality of electrodes disposed on the side thereof closer to said gap. Covering said electrodes are dielectric means which contact said gap. The dielectric means comprises a first portion having a high secondary electron emissivity and a second portion having a secondary electron emissivity lower than said first portion. The plasma display panel according to the present invention can be used to improve the definition of a displayed pattern in the plasma display panel, or as a self shift plasma display panel, and or as a pattern generator in an information processing system.

A manufacturing method for a gas discharge panel according to the invention can reduce the amount of water and gaseous molecules, which are absorbed into the first and the second substrates, to a minimum by keeping the both substrates under a reduced pressure, and therefore can prevent a degradation of a discharge gas filling the finished panel. As a result, problems in the finished panel such as increase in a discharge starting voltage and generation of an abnormal discharge can be suppressed.
