    Abstract: The present invention provides novel hybrid polymer useful for alignment layers for inducing alignment of a liquid crystal medium. Hybrid polymers of this invention are prepared from a) at least one component selected from the group consisting of oligomer(s) and polymer(s) within the class of polyimides, poly(amic acids) and esters thereof wherein the at least one component comprises at least one initiator generating moiety, and b) at least one component selected from the group consisting of addition monomer(s) and addition polymer(s), wherein the two components are covalently bonded to form a copolymer. The invention further describes liquid crystal elements such as all liquid crystal display products or modes, liquid crystal devices and liquid crystal optical films comprising the novel hybrid polymer alignment layers.

    Abstract: In this invention, polyimidazole ligands (PILs) incorporating pendant imidazole moieties for nanocrystal binding and either sulfonatebetaine, carboxybetaine, or phosphocholinebetaine moieties for water-solubilization have been developed. Greatly enhanced stability of nanocrystals (both over time and in wide pH range) was achieved by incorporating multi-dentate imidazole moieties which provide strong coordination of the ligand to the nanocrystal surface and prevent aggregation of nanocrystals. Synthesis of betaine PILs was developed by modifying the synthesis of recently developed PEG containing poly imidazole ligands (PEG PILs). These nanocrystals are compact, water soluble, and biocompatible.

    Abstract: Polymer compositions formed by polymerizing a vinyl compound, e.g., a vinyl halide, a bis(hydrocarbyl)vinylphosphonate e.g., bis(beta-chloroethyl)vinylphosphonate, and an allyl halide, e.g., allyl chloride, find use as flame retardant plasticizers when the amount of allyl halide ranges between about 20% and 50% by weight and can be used as flame retardant solid additives when the amount of allyl halide ranges between about 5 and 20% by weight of the composition.
