    摘要: In a print wheel encoding scheme, signs such as reflector strips are arranged on an encoder ring along the print wheel petals. One strip is provided at each petal. The strips are grouped into groups of three or more petals. Each group starts with a reflective strip and terminates with a non-reflective strip, or vice versa. The strips are read by a single optical sensor to provide a reliable mechanism for reading the print wheel I.D., homing the print wheel and detecting print wheel error conditions such as jams or mispositioning.

    摘要: A manually set bar code generating device is easily attachable to a mail container such as an envelope. A housing rotatably mounts a series of concentric circular rings which are imprinted with bar code characters on one side and with alphanumeric characters on a diametrically opposite side. The housing includes diametrically opposed windows that expose a bar code character on one side while exposing its alphanumeric counterpart on the other side. Each single ring thus sets up a single character of a bar code sequence. The series of rings sets up the desired sequence of bar code characters in one window as the desired sequence of alphanumeric characters is dialed into place in the opposite window. The side-by-side rings are independently rotatable about a central axis of the housing. Rotation of the individual rings is accomplished by inserting a pointed instrument into one of a series of depressions in the ring. Protrusions on the bottom of the ring snap into recesses in the housing to accurately position the indicia in the windows. Tapered grooves in the housing mate with conical side walls of the rings to maintain precise ring-to-ring spacing.

    摘要: An impact printing system which is particularly suitable for word processing is provided with the capability of effecting mid-line pitch changes. The impact printer system which is particularly compatible with interactive display terminals in word processing system has means for receiving a selected one of a plurality of type or character font elements. The pitch of character font elements are different from each other. The printing system includes means for selectively impacting selected characters from selected fonts along lines in a document. The system further includes control apparatus for controlling and determining the selection of font elements to be used and in the case of printing with a particular font element, the characters to be printed in respective positions along the lines of the document to provide the desired document format. The control apparatus includes apparatus for controlling the printing with at least two different font elements having different pitch along a single line.

    摘要: An impact printer utilizes a single print hammer which is loaded with a selected type chip transferred from a rotatable carousel cartridge containing plural type chips. A single solenoid motor is energized to effect chip transfer, the loading of a spring to effect subsequent return of the chip to the cartridge, and the loading of an energy storage spring utilized to power the print hammer toward a platen. Completion of the chip transfer to the print hammer releases the print hammer to be powered by the storage spring until the solenoid motor is de-energized. The solenoid armature provides a reaction force to the storage spring only during solenoid energization. The duration of solenoid energization thus controls the impact force of the print hammer and is varied in accordance with the character area of the selected type chip and with the desired print density. An interlock latch prevents return motion of the type chip positioning and transfer mechanism during printing and during return motion of the print hammer. A restraining latch restrains the print hammer in its chip receiving position until the chip transfer to the print hammer is completed. The latching member of this latch is resiliently urged to restore the type chip to the cartridge upon return of the print hammer to its chip receiving position. An additional mechanism insures clearance of the latch member from the cartridge upon return of the type chip thereto.

The apparatus includes selectively settable printing members driven by wheels coupled by gearing with read wheels for indicating the selected data to be printed. A method of shifting a moving unit from a first position to a second position by means of a stepping motor driven by a finite sequence of pulses, said moving unit being liable to oscillate about its equilibrium point, characterized in that as a function of the period and of the damping factor of the oscillation, the time intervals which separate said pulses are chosen so that the last pulse is applied to the motor at an instant when the oscillation resulting from the set of preceding pulses brings the moving unit substantially to the required final position and reduces its speed substantially to zero. It applies in particular to disc-type printers.

The wheel is rotated continuously about the axis of the helical path. A drive mechanism which is coupled to the wheel is operable upon receipt of a data character to be printed to step the wheel along a print line one column at a time. A rack and pawl mechanism is added to hold the print wheel at its last columnar printing position until the next character to be printed is received.
