An image forming system, image forming apparatus and tray for the same are provided. The tray supports sheets and may include a coupling including first and second connectable members, a cam and clutch. The coupling allows the driving force to be transmitted when the second connectable member is in a connected position and block the driving force to be transmitted when the second connectable member is in a disconnected position. The cam is rotatable by the driving force to be in a transmitting or a blocking state. The clutch allows the cam to rotate when activated and prevents the cam from rotating when deactivated. A controller can activate the clutch to transmit or block the driving force to the load and deactivate the clutch when the cam is placed in the transmitting or blocking states.

A rotary arm restricts the rotation of a first sun gear or a second sun gear according to forward/reverse rotation drive of sheet discharge rollers. As a result, a rotating direction of a transmission gear coupled to the sheet discharge rollers is switched. If θ1A denotes a pressure angle of gear teeth of a gear portion of the first sun gear and θ2A denotes a pressure angle of gear teeth of a first planetary gear, a relationship of θ2A+0.5°≤θ1A≤θ2A+1.5° is satisfied.

An image reading apparatus includes a reading unit, a conveyance unit configured to convey the sheet, a support portion configured to support the conveyance unit openably and movably with respect to the reading unit in a vertical direction between an upper position and a lower position, a bundled wire transmitting a signal or electric power to the conveyance unit, and a cover portion configured to cover the bundled wire. The cover portion includes a first cover member provided on the conveyance unit and a second cover member provided movably in the vertical direction with respect to the reading unit. A whole length of the cover portion in the vertical direction in a case where the conveyance unit is located at the upper position is longer than a whole length of the cover portion in a case where the conveyance unit is located at the lower position.

An image reading apparatus is formed of a main portion having an image reading function; a driving source provided in the main portion; a reversing device, on which the main portion is detachably mounted; and a driving power transmitting device connected to the driving source. The reversing device has a device to reverse a document fed from the main portion in a state where the main portion is mounted thereto and to return the document back to the main portion. The driving power transmitting device drives the reversing device by transmitting a driving power from the driving source under a condition that the main portion is mounted on the reversing device. Thus, although the reversing device is not provided with a driving source, the reversing device can be actuated.

An apparatus for scanning a sheet-shaped recording medium comprises a conveyance system provided with a conveying roller and a plurality of nip rollers for conveying the recording medium in co-operation with the conveying roller, and a scanning optical system for scanning the conveyed recording medium by a light beam in a scanning direction normal to the conveyance direction. One of the conveying roller and the nip rollers is fabricated as edge rollers contacting the other of said conveying roller and said nip rollers only near both end portions of the other. The scanning optical system is positioned on the side of the edge rollers.

An image forming apparatus includes an original document transfer section for transferring a document to a predetermined position, a scanning section for scanning the document, an image forming section and a control device for controlling the functional sections. The control device energizes the exposure lamp in the scanning section at a predetermined time, before the document reaches a predetermined position, and starts the movement of the exposure lamp toward the start position of the effective scanning operation.

An image transfer type image building apparatus includes a platen and a recording head, the latter being adapted to come in contact or out of contact with the former. A cassette containing a supply of thermal transfer ribbon wound on a pair of winding cores is positioned opposite the platen with respect to the recording head. A driving power source for displacing the recording head is positioned opposite the recording head with respect to the cassette. Driving power is transmitted from the driving power source to the recording head via power transmitting members which extend between the winding cores. The cassette is detachably secured to a frame member of the apparatus. The driving power source is mounted outside the cassette permitting the cassette structure to be designed in smaller dimensions.

A power switching device includes a translation mechanism, an active mechanism, and a transmission mechanism. The translation mechanism includes a rack. The active mechanism includes an active gear and a driver. The active gear connects with a first functional mechanism, and the driver drives the active gear to rotate in a first direction or a second direction. The transmission mechanism connects with a second functional mechanism. The active gear is switched between a first position and a second position. In the first position, the active gear is connected to the transmission mechanism and rotates in the first direction to drive the transmission mechanism to rotate, thereby driving the second functional mechanism to operate. In the second position, the active gear meshes with the rack and rotates in the first direction or the second direction to reciprocate on the rack so as to drive the first functional mechanism to operate.
