A radio frequency (RF) power generator system includes a power generator that generates a RF power signal that is output to a load. The RF generator generates a forward power feedback signal and a reverse power feedback signal. A controller receives the forward power feedback signal and the reverse power feedback signal. The controller generates a setpoint signal that is output to the power generator. A setpoint modifier receives the forward feedback signal, the reverse feedback signal and an external setpoint signal. The setpoint modifier calculates a forward power limit based on the forward and reverse power feedback signals. The setpoint modifier and outputs a modified setpoint signal to the controller based on one of the forward power limit and the external setpoint signal. The setpoint modifier and the controller can be integrated.

A powered transducer preamplifier includes a preamplifier circuit that DC couples the preamplifier input with the preamplifier output. A biasing circuit is coupled to the preamplifier input to apply a bias voltage to power the transducer, and a DC level shifting circuit is DC coupled to the signal path of the preamplifier circuit between the input and the output to compensate for this bias voltage. The DC level shifting circuit avoids the use of reactive components, and thereby reduces phase distortion. A variety of DC level shifting circuits can be used, including a bridge circuit having four matched resistors and an inverter DC coupled between the nodes of the bridge.

Over-voltage protection circuits are provided for power supplies that may limit input voltage spikes to a power converter and amplifiers including a damping loop that may damp filter resonance. Active damping systems incorporating the over-voltage protection circuits and/or damping loops of the present invention are also provided which may be particularly advantageous in applications such as aircraft or other vehicle applications where size and power consumption are important design considerations. The over-voltage protection circuit in various embodiments senses AC and/or DC voltage levels above a detection threshold level and momentarily disconnects the voltage input to thereby reduce the maximum voltage level input transients seen by the power converter. A capacitor may be provided to maintain the input voltage to the power converter while the input is switched out. The amplifier circuit damping loop in various embodiments is nested with a control circuit current feedback loop which may compensate for feedback problems such as instability which may result when an inductor-capacitor-inductor (L-C-L) filter is included on the output of the amplifier.

A phase comparison circuit for generating control voltages for a number of varactors of a phase locked loop (PLL) circuit has been disclosed. According to a particular embodiment, a number of phase difference detection circuits (101, 102 and 103) can be successively activated in response to a set of activation signals to generate output voltage signals (Vtunei). Output voltage signals (Vtunei) can vary according to an elapsed period time, and thus represent a phase difference. Each phase difference detection circuit (101, 102 and 103) can activate a trigger signal (Trg) when an internal voltage signal equals a predetermined value. A main signal (SIG) can be input as an activation signal to a first stage phase difference detection circuit (101). A trigger signal from a first stage phase difference detection circuit (101) can be input as an activation signal to a subsequent stage phase difference detection circuit (102). Phase difference detection circuits (101, 102 and 103) can be deactivated in response to an output signal (out) generated in response to a reference signal (REF), and provide output voltages (Vtunei) which can represent a phase difference between reference signal (REF) and a main signal (SIG).
