摘要: The voltage limiter is used to effectively limit short-term and long-term overvoltages. Said voltage limiter has a varistor (1) and a discharge path which can be connected in parallel with the varistor. The discharge path contains a switching point (4), which is preferably in the form of a semiconductor switch and can be loaded with an uninterrupted current, and which can be closed above a limit value of a signal which is dependent on an operating variable of the varistor (1). The varistor (1) is arranged in a first area (24) and the switching point (4) is arranged in a second area (26) of two areas (24, 26, 28) which are at an axial distance from one another in the direction of an axis of symmetry (20). Means (5) for operating the switching point (4) are accommodated in a third area (28), which is at a defined potential. The arrangement of the components (1, 4, 5) of the voltage limiter in separate areas (24, 26, 28) results in a compact, modular construction, and those components of the voltage limiter which are subject to power loading, namely the varistor (1) and the switching point (5), are physically separated from one another, so that they can be cooled independently of one another. Since the operating means (5), which generally operate electronically, are accommodated in an electromagnetically shielded area (28), the operational reliability of the voltage limiter is at the same time improved, and, in particular, undesirable high-energy electromagnetic interference is kept away from this area (28).

摘要: A system to protect electrical circuits from rapid changes of voltage associated with a fault in an electrical load comprises an inductor placed in series between a drive circuit and load. The inductor is designed to be inefficient or lossy when the inductor core is magnetised. Magnetisation of the core only occurs when a rapid change in voltage is applied across the inductor coils. Because the inductor is inefficient, the induced impedance in the inductor increases rapidly during a fault event. The overall impedance of the circuit increases rapidly and the rapid change in voltage is dissipated at a rate associated with the CR constant of the circuit.

摘要: An electrical transient protection circuit in a vehicle includes an input connector, which receives an input voltage, a means for absorbing, which is electrically connected to the input connector, and a means for blocking, which is electrically connected to the input connector. At least one of the means for absorbing and the means for blocking conditions the input voltage by suppressing a voltage transient and producing a corresponding output voltage. The voltage transient is up to i) about 8 times the input voltage through a source impedance of about 0.4null for about 0.5 seconds, ii) about 50 times the input voltage through a source impedance of about 20.0null for about 1.0 millisecond, and iii) about 50 times a negative of the input voltage through a source impedance of about 20.0null for about 1.0 millisecond. An output connector delivers the output voltage, which is about 110% of the input voltage, to an electrical component on the vehicle.

摘要: A protective element safely dissipates overvoltages which is comprised of a parallel connection of a varistor and an surge arrester. To reduce the capacity of the protective element, the varistor is fashioned as a disc and arranged between a contact pin and the surge arrester. An electrical isolation between contact pin and varistor is ensured by an electrically isolated spacer, in which openings for electrical contact elements are provided to connect the varistor with the cup and the contact pin with the surge arrester. The surge arrester and the spacer are preferably fit positively into the cup.

摘要: Lossy materials can be used to suppress EMI transmission. Disclosed are methods for applying lossy materials to EMI shielded enclosures to improve EMI shielding effectiveness and the EMI shielded enclosures so produced. In some embodiments, the EMI shielded enclosure includes a printed-circuit board mountable device. In one embodiment, lossy material can be applied to the interior of an EMI shielded enclosure using an adhesive. In another embodiment, lossy materials can be applied to the exterior of the EMI enclosure to suppress EMI incident upon the EMI shielded enclosure, thereby reducing the susceptibility of electronics contained within the EMI shielded enclosure. In yet another embodiment, lossy materials can be applied to both the interior and exterior of the EMI enclosure.

摘要: A stand-alone voltage surge suppression device for use with household appliances is arranged for connection to conventional female wall type outlets. The device is made to plug into an outlet socket and protect the adjacent sockets. The surge components of the device include two sets of varistors and thermofuses. In this embodiment, there are two sets of varistors and thermofuses. One is a primary varistor and fuse combination set at a lower voltage, and the other is a secondary group set at a higher voltage. Both take effect in surge protection, however, with enough hits, the lower one will fail first. Even so, the secondary group will still provide sufficient, although reduced amount of protection. In order for the user to know the status of the unit, there are two indicator lamps on the outside of the device. The surge protector preferably includes a light source arranged to indicate when the primary pair of varistors stops functioning. The surge protector may further include a first light source arranged to indicate when the primary pair of varistors stops functioning and a second light source arranged to indicate when the secondary pair of varistors stops functioning.
