A structure is provided, where an auxiliary pole is not disposed between the reproducing element of the reproducing head and the main pole of a recording head when seen from a surface facing to recording media.

A multi-element read-write magnetic recording head for recording information on a magnetic tape and for reading recorded information therefrom is provided. The recording head comprises an equal number of associated read elements and write elements to form a two-gap recording head comprising pairs of read and write elements. The two-gap recording head further comprises a first module and a second module, the first and second modules each comprising a plurality of read and write head elements. A first group of read and write heads is configured to perform in a forward direction of movement of the magnetic tape and a second group of read and write heads is configured to perform in a reverse direction of movement of the magnetic tape. One of the modules contains an equal number of forward read heads and reverse write heads and the other of the modules contains an equal number of reverse read heads and forward write heads, to provide decoupling of reading and writing functions and to enable servoing by a given read element of a write element associated therewith. Asymmetry of the magnetic recording head is provided by offsetting leads to the read elements in a given module from leads to said write elements in the same module, while maintaining orthogonality between read and write element leads near the read and write elements. The asymmetry minimizes both inductive and capacitive feedthrough into adjacent readers. As a consequence, noise produced during the writing process is reduced, providing an improved signal-to-noise ratio and thereby permitting same gap servoing.

In a magnetic head assembly for a flexible disk drive, a write/read head and an erase head are formed with grooves defining track widths only in I-shaped cores thereof. Erase track widths are dimensioned 53 &mgr;m to 63 &mgr;m each while a track width is dimensioned 125 &mgr;m to 135 &mgr;m. These dimensions correct the extension of magnetic fluxes from gaps. Hence, the assembly does not lower the reproduction output or erase the data of adjoining tracks, thereby insuring compatibility of magnetic recording media or disks.

A variable width flat tape head for bi-directional contact recording and method for making the same has significant advantages over both traditional contoured tape heads and single width flat heads for contact recording applications. The variable width head and process disclosed herein allows for greater ease of manufacturing, efficient layout of the devices on thin film wafers and provides a significant cost reduction in the production of the head compared to traditionally contoured tape heads. In addition, the present invention reduces unnecessary surface area where the tape contacts the head, thus reducing tape wear and damage that is present in single width flat heads (where the tape is in contact uniformly across the tape width), thereby providing a concomitant improvement in tape wear and life. In addition, the head of the present invention is simpler and less costly to manufacture than comparable devices with distinct advantages to the magnetoresistive (“MR”) read element stripe height control process, device alignment and assembly processes, particularly with respect to traditionally contoured tape heads, which require more complex and expensive manufacturing operations to form the tape head profile.

By way of the write head (360) the magnetic tape (310) has been provided with a pattern of servotracks ST101-ST127 which extend in a longitudinal direction (x). The odd-numbered servotracks contain a first servosignal and the even-numbered servotracks contain a second servosignal Sb which is phase opposition to the first servosignal. The servotracks ST103-ST113 and ST116-ST126 have a typical width W1 and form a group of two bands of N1 servotracks which are separated by a band of N2 servotracks ST114, ST115 having a typical width W2. The magnetic tape (310) is provided to cooperate with an apparatus including eight magnetic write heads (H31-H38). The actuator is controlled in response to the servosignals read by the heads. The center-to-center distance (p) between the magnetic write heads (H31-H38) is equal to four times the typical width W1 and, moreover, it holds that: N2=2, 4, 6 etc. and W2=(k+½)W1 or N2=1, 3, 5 etc. and W2=2k.W1, where k=1, 2 etc.

Read and write performance in a magnetic thin-film head is improved by forming a highly compact multiple-gap head with separate magnetic core and coil structures for a read head and a write head that are respectively designed to improve reading and writing performance. A thin film magnetic head includes a thin-film magnetic core including a read core portion and an interconnected write core portion, a thin-film read coil encircling the read core portion, and a thin-film write coil encircling the write core portion. The read core portion is separated by a read magnetic gap and the write core portion being separated by a write magnetic gap. The read gap and write gap are mutually combined in close proximity in abutting sections of the read core portion and the write core portion respectively so that a magnetic medium is accessible to the read gap and the write gap simultaneously.
