This invention is an apparatus consisting of components that can be assembled and reassembled in various configurations allowing students to perform multiple physics and engineering experiments, with sensors and electronics integrated into the apparatus that allowing extraction of data via integrated data links, while computing and displaying results graphically in near real time. The principal component of the system is a linear drive system with a movable carriage, the position of which is measureable by various rotary and linear encoders. Load cells are able to measure forces of compression and tension. Temperature and Pressure sensors are able to measure gas pressure and the thermal conductivity of materials. The various components of this flexible educational tool can be disassembled and stored in a portable “toolkit”, the size of a small briefcase.

A device for demonstrating the relative effectiveness of various types of thermal insulation having a plenum chamber, at least two cells each communicating with the plenum chamber and receiving a quantity of insulation therein, and a separate after chamber communicating with each cell and the atmosphere with a thermometer received therein. A portion of a stream of heated air under pressure discharged into the plenum chamber passes through each cell and its associated after chamber and is discharged into the atmosphere. The differences in the temperature, as indicated by the thermometers, of the stream of air passing through each after chamber provide a visual indication of the relative effectiveness of the insulation in each cell and such differences in temperature can be physically sensed by a person who successively places a hand in the stream of air discharged to the atmosphere from each after chamber.

The present invention provides a dynamic contact heat transfer simulation device for rolling heavy-load deformation zone. The device includes a control system, a data acquisition system, a pressure-adjustable fixed cold end, a rotating chuck, a temperature-adjustable heat-conducting rod and an speed-adjustable rotation hot end; the device utilizes the rotating chuck and the speed-adjustable rotating hot end to adjust the rotation speed in real time according to the actual rolling conditions, simulate the working conditions of the actual rolling heavy-load deformation zone, and accurately obtain the dynamic heat transfer coefficient of the rotating contact interface under variable load pressure conditions.

The device comprises a base member, a chamber for containing a supply of a liquid, means for securing the chamber to the base member, a thermally conductive metal insert and a thermometer. Included are means on the chamber for holding the metal insert and the thermometer in contact with a supply of liquid. Means are included for rubbing the metal insert.
