Abstract: A spectrometer that includes an array of illumination sources positioned to illuminate a detection area with a plurality of beams of light. A detector is responsive to the detection area, and a spectroscopic signal output is responsive to relative amounts of light from the beams in different spectral regions received by the detector after interaction with the sample in the detection area.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for combining the spectral outputs of multiple light sources to provide a high-efficiency broad-band illuminator for optical metrology is disclosed. The illuminator combines the output radiation from a plurality of broad-band lamps in a novel optical arrangement that creates a virtual source and avoids the use of beam-splitters. Consequently, the illuminator offers increased performance at reduced cost. The illuminator can be optimized and configured for application in a broad class of optical metrology instruments.

Abstract: In a spectrophotometer, a position of a motor corresponding to a 254 nm bright line in the last check is read out from a memory section, and only a low-pressure mercury lamp is lighted up to scan a grating around the 254 nm line position in the last check, so that the 254 nm line position where a 254 nm line is ejected on a cell is detected. The low-pressure mercury lamp is turned off, and after only a D2 lamp is lighted up, the grating is scanned to detect an original position where an original or zero-order light is ejected on the cell and a 656 nm line position where a 656 nm line is ejected on the cell. Then, based on the 254 nm line position and the 656 nm line position which are actually measured, wavelength check is carried out.

Abstract: A light source for an atomizing device, specifically an atom absorption spectrometer comprising one, two, or more lamps, whose ray can be selected by means of at least one two-dimensionally moveable optical selection element, and which can be directed in the direction of atomizing device. Fine-tuning is thereby achieved quickly with little constructive expenditure and with low costs. A very high degree of accuracy is possible from the selector through a rotational and highly adjustable rotation spindle.

Abstract: An illumination subsystem for use in optical analysis which provides spatially and angularly homogenized radiation to the sample being analyzed. The system eliminates the illumination system as an interferent in the overall optical analysis. Thus, modest translations or rotations of the illumination source or changing the illumination source does not require recalibration of the instrument or prior modeling of illumination variability due to such changes. Illumination stability is achieved by incorporating a light pipe which both angularly and spatially homogenizes the light. Further, a series of filters and/or lenses are incorporated to provide bandpass filtering which eliminates unwanted wavelengths or bands of wavelengths from contacting the tissue and allows for a higher signal-to-noise ratio when the sample is tissue, while preventing thermal damage.
