    Abstract: An incinerator comprises a pre-drying grate, a combustion grate or drum following the pre-drying grate, and a drop intermediate the pre-drying grate and the combustion grate or drum. The drop is the front wall of an air distribution box extending over the width of the pre-drying grate, this wall including air throughflow apertures whereby air passes from the box to a combustion chamber above the combustion grate or drum. The speed of the air flow from the apertures varies over the wall, with the highest speed flows being adjacent to the side walls of the chamber.

    Abstract: A reciprocating bearing assembly is disclosed for supporting a stoker grate carriage in a reciprocating stoker of the type having a stoker grate housing, a plurality of stationary and movable grates and a drive mechanism to reciprocate the grate carriage and movable grates of the stoker to provide a stoking action, the bearing assembly including a stub shaft fixed to the stoker housing, a bearing member journaled on the shaft with means for permitting limited angular and axial movement of the bearing member with respect to the shaft, and a downwardly opening guideway mounted on the grate carriage and engageable with a bearing surface on the bearing member to permit reciprocation of the guideway with respect to the bearing surface of the bearing member.

    Abstract: An assembly for feeding refuse from a charging chute of an incinerator onto a stoker disposed in the incinerator comprising a stationary support means disposed adjacent the stoker, stationary guide means mounted on the support means in alignment with the stoker, a first movable support means mounted on the stationary support means, movable along a line of travel disposed in alignment with the stoker and having a first ram means operable to advance refuse received from the charging chute toward the stoker upon advancement of the first movable support means, a second movable support means mounted on the first movable support means, movable along the line of travel and having a second ram means operable to advance refuse received from the charging chute toward the stoker upon advancement of the second movable means, means for displacing the first movable means along the line of travel, and the first movable means having means for engaging the second movable means whereby upon advancement of the first movable means along the line of travel, the first movable means sequentially will displace relative to and in unison with the second movable means to correspondingly displace the first and second ram means for advancing and upsetting the refuse.

    Abstract: A burner for combusting particulate fuels comprises a combustion chamber fitted with a plurality of grates stacked in stairstep fashion, each having a downwardly sloping surface over which the fuel flows continuously as it burns. The grates may be horizontally adjustable to change the downward slope of the flowing fuel. Each grate rests upon supports projecting from opposite side walls of the burner. The supports extend beyond the downwardly sloping surfaces of the grates and beyond the forward edge of the fuel bed so that the flow of fuel is diverted by the supports away from the side walls of the firebox, creating air passages which allow air to flow directly to the flame. The burner is fitted with a hopper for receiving and containing the fuel with a baffle plate depending from it shaped to distribute the fuel across the width of the grate in a manner which promotes the flow of the fuel. Tubular channels are positioned below the lowermost grate so that air is supplied to any unburned fuel accumulating at the bottom of the incinerator.
