The melt indices of polyformaldehyde having stabilized terminal groups or copolymers of formaldehyde or trioxane with cyclic ethers are reduced by adding a copolymer of trioxane containing carboxylate groups. The carboxylate-containing polymers may be prepared by copolymerizing trioxane and optionally cyclic ethers with p-glycidyl benzoic acid esters and then saponifying the esters groups. The metal of the carboxylate group is selected from metals of the first two groups of the Periodic Table. By incorporating from 1 to 50 percent by weight of the carboxylatecontaining polymers in conventional polyoxymethylene polymers, the melt indices thereof are substantially reduced.

Compositions comprise (1) a polymer of formaldehyde or trioxan, (2) a stabilizer of the formula where R, R 1 are alkyl radicals having 1 to 8 carbon atoms, and optionally (3) a superpolyamide, cyanoguanidine, substituted cyanoguanidine, polyaminotriazole, amino - substituted-s-triazine, imidazoline or a mixture thereof. The polymers (1) have a molecular weight of 10,000 to 200,000 and a melting-point of above 150‹ C., while the components (2) and (3) are suitably used in amounts of 0À1 to 30% and 0À01 to 50% respectively, based on the polymer (1). The examples use the following polymers: (Example 1) an acetylated polyoxymethylene and (Examples 2 and 3), a trioxan-dioxolan copolymer having an inherent viscosity of 1À8. Exemplified component (2) is 1,3,5-trimethyl- 2,4,6 - tris 13,5 - di - t. - butyl - 4 - hydroxy - benzyl) benzene. Exemplified component (3) is a terpolymeric superpolyamide having 38% polycaprolactam, 35% polyhexamethylene adipamide, and 27% polyhexamethylene sebacamide.

A thermoplastic molding composition is composed of a linear poly(oxymethylene) and a graft copolymer the side chains of which consist essentially of oxymethylene groups. The said graft copolymer acts as a nucleating agent; its effectiveness is dependent on its amount, molecular weight and degree of grafting. Molded articles made of said composition show improved mechanical properties.

Formaldehyde polymers and copolymers are stabilized by incorporating 0.05 to 10 percent by weight of a complex obtained in the form of a precipitate by contacting, in a solvent or solvent mixture, an antioxidant of the phenolic type which has an acidic character and polyvinyl pyrrolidone. A composition of matter comprising said formaldehyde and said stabilizer is also claimed.
