A method and apparatus for thixotropic molding of semisolid alloys are disclosed. The method comprises of feeding a dendritic-free feedstock bar into an extruder barrel, melting a terminal portion of the feedstock bar into a semisolid slurry by heating it to a temperature between its solidus and liquidus temperatures, and using the solid portion of the feedstock bar as an one-time nullplungernull to inject the semisolid slurry into a mold cavity. The apparatus based on the present method, which is equipped without a regular extruder screw or plunger, uses a feedstock bar as a one-time plunger to inject semisolid slurries formed from a terminal portion of the same feedstock bar.

The method includes the steps of (A) separating an injection nozzle of an injection chamber from contacting a mold surface, (B) retracting a plunger in the injection chamber to create a suction in the injection chamber, (C) closing an inlet to the injection chamber to seal the injection chamber, (D) maintaining melted metal in the injection chamber with a pressure difference and surface tension without substantial drooling from the injection nozzle, (E) placing the injection nozzle in contact with the mold surface and (F) advancing the plunger in the injection chamber to inject the metal into the mold.

A material melting device of metal injection molding machine comprises a main feeding cylinder; a plurality of preheat feed cylinders parallel arranged at a lateral side of a main feeding cylinder of a metal injection molding machine; a plurality of material inlets formed at a side of each preheat feed cylinder. The material inlets are communicated to the main feeding cylinder through the guide tubes. Thereby, an inner side of the preheat feed cylinder is pre-heated so as to get preheat grains by adjusting the preheat screw rods in the preheat feed cylinder. Moreover, the preheat feed cylinders can be replaced by feeding funnels and the guide tubes are replaced by heating pipes.
