The spray nozzles are located on rear and side walls (114, 116, 118) and on a door (18) of the chamber, such that the device is impinged with spray from all directions. Sets (102, 104) of the spray nozzles are pulsed in sequence so that the spray jets (122) do not cancel each other out. Leaking connectors (184) connect the automated processor connection ports with inlet ports (196) of the device and allow a portion of the cleaning, decontaminant, and rinsing solutions to leak from each inlet port. A computer control system (80) controls cleaning, decontamination, rinsing, and drying stages of a cycle, which are all carried out within the chamber, obviating the need for human contact with the device during processing.

An automated sanitizing system for a vacuum ice conveyance system generally includes a source of sanitizing solution, a source of ice, an ice hopper for association of the sanitizing solution with the ice and an outlet from the ice hopper for introduction of the association of solution and ice into a vacuum ice conveyance system. The sanitizing solution is produced at the ice hopper by mixing a concentrated sanitizing agent with water, whereafter the solution is sprayed over a harvest of ice as the ice is dropped into the hopper for conveyance through the vacuum ice conveyance system. The system is also adapted to associate clean water with the ice for rinsing from the conveyance system of the sanitizing agent.

Preferably, the disinfectant also contains an additional chemical sterilization agent, e.g., hydrogen peroxide, in very low concentrations within the range of between 0.5 and 3.0 percent of the weight of the alcohol solution. The disinfectant is usable in industrial contexts for bacteriological cleaning of surfaces, for example, inner walls in pipelines, conduits, reaction vessels, and other process equipment, without corroding or chemically attacking the material in such surfaces.

Composition and method for simultaneously disinfecting and conditioning a wooden cutting surface, such as a cutting board or counter top. According to a preferred embodiment, the composition comprises a mixture of ethanol and food-grade mineral oil where the ethanol is present in an amount sufficient impart antiseptic properties. To the extent desired, other adjuvants, such as flavor enhancers, coloring agents, and the like may be added. The method comprises contacting the wooden cutting surface with such composition for a time sufficient to enable the ethanol to adequately disinfect the cutting surface. Preferably, such method may be performed by merely spraying or wiping the composition directly onto the wooden cutting surface.
