Abstract: A ballistocardiographic method and monitoring system calculates an indicator of the average heart rate of a test subject within a time interval. The test subject may be a fetus inside a mother's belly, or infant lying in the same bed as an adult. The monitoring system comprises a recoil surface and an acceleration sensor in contact with the recoil surface. A control unit identifies in the time domain the characteristics of the adult's heartbeat during the time interval. The output signal is then transformed to the frequency domain across the time interval and the signal is screened with the adult heartbeat characteristics. The indicator is then calculated from the screened signal in the frequency domain. The control unit monitors the indicator of the infant or fetus heart rate and may provide an alert if the indicator value drops very rapidly, or falls below a predetermined threshold value.

Abstract: A phantom for simulating fetal heartbeat. The phantom includes a housing and a fetal heartbeat simulator. The housing has an exterior shaped like a female human pelvic region and surrounds an interior. The fetal heartbeat simulator includes a tube having a proximal end and a distal end, the distal end being positioned within the interior of the housing. The tube is filled with a first fluid having a first compressibility. A second fluid, having a compressibility that is greater than the compressibility of the first fluid, is disposed at the distal end of the tube. A pressure mechanism operably coupled to the proximal end of the tube is configured to selectively compress and decompress the first and second fluids.

Abstract: Sensor-based systems, devices, and methods are disclosed for monitoring for an aortocaval compression condition in a pregnant woman. A sensor device may be secured directly or indirectly to the woman, which may collect various sensor data related to the woman and/or the fetus. The device may determine a physical orientation of the woman (e.g., upright and/or lateral tilt angles of the woman) and/or biometric parameter(s) of the woman and/or fetus based on the collected sensor data, identify an aortocaval compression condition based on the determined orientation of the woman and/or biometric parameter(s) of the woman and/or fetus, and generate a repositioning alert via an alert mechanism. The disclosed concepts may be implemented, for example, as a personal home-use device, or as a broader system in a hospital or other medical facility, e.g., for monitoring and displaying aortocaval compression related information for multiple patients and/or facilitating patient turn protocols.
