Abstract: A thermally protective composite material is provided, which can be used in making garments. The thermally protective composite material includes an outer layer of fabric/textile, an adhesive layer applied to the outer layer of fabric in a geometric pattern, and an elastic inner layer of fabric/textile, adhered in a stretched state, to the outer layer via the adhesive layer. The elastic inner layer, when in a relaxed state, causes the adhered outer layer to vault/bubble forming raised cavities according to the geometric pattern of the adhesive. When constructed into garments the thermally protective composite material can stretch between the relaxed state and the stretched state of the elastic inner layer.

Abstract: Articles and methods of using and making adaptive garment portions are provided. An adaptive garment portion is one that has shifting surfaces with apertures that shift from an aligned to an offset orientation depending on environmental conditions/stimuli. For example, a first surface material and a second surface material may be coupled by a responsive material portion. The responsive material portion may physically change in response to a change in environmental conditions internal or external to the garment (e.g., thermal energy, moisture) and/or stimuli (e.g., light energy, electrical energy, magnetic fields). The physical change in the responsive material portion facilitates the planar shift of the first surface material relative to the second surface material.

Abstract: A cell pattern is provided that may be arranged on an interior portion of a garment or other outdoor equipment. The cell pattern may help keep a garment wearer warm while also improving the breathability of the garment. The cell pattern may comprise warming cells that may take on a variety of shapes, sizes, and patterns, but the cells are preferably square-shaped and arranged in rows a “running-bond” or offset brick-like pattern. Rows of cells may be attached to a shell material, with each of row of insulated cells separated from one another by non-insulated channels. Each cell within a row is preferably attached to the shell on two of its opposite sides such that air flows over and under the cells to improve temperature regulation around the wearer's body.

Abstract: An adaptive textile that includes a plurality of a first fiber having a first expansion coefficient and a plurality of a second fiber having a second expansion coefficient. There is a difference between the expansion coefficient of the first fiber and the expansion coefficient of the second fiber; at least one of the first or second fibers is a twisted coil actuator; and linear displacement of the twisted coil actuator causes the adaptive textile to bend.

Abstract: An active-insulation paneling component and garments including an active-insulation paneling component are disclosed. The active-insulation paneling component includes insulated panels separated by gussets. The gussets are configured to expand upon an outward pulling force to allow the active-insulation paneling component and/or garment to expand even where the active-insulation paneling component and/or garment are not manufactured from elastic materials.
