Abstract: Described is a system for milking animals, including cows, having an accommodation space in which the animals can walk around, and several stationary milking stations placed next to each other. Each milking station at a head end thereof includes a neck lock device which can be moved by way of an actuator device between a locked state in which a milking animal in said milking station can be locked at the neck by said neck lock device, and an open state in which a milking animal in said milking station is free to move its head in and/or out of the neck lock device. Also included is an automatic milking system for the automatic milking of milking animals and a control system that is actively connected to the actuator device of each neck lock device.

Abstract: A walk-through flat barn parlor comprises a number of modular stalls for managing dairy cows. Each module has a frame to which a pair of gates are mounted. The axes of rotation for the gates make compound angles with the vertical such that the gates are biased by gravity to rotate from a closed mode to a ready open mode. A control mechanism is actuated by a cable mechanism from a milking station to unlock the gates for automatic rotation by gravity from the closed mode to the ready open mode. A cow walks to the ready open gates and pushes them to the closed mode, where she is constrained for milking. After completion of milking, the farmer actuates the cable mechanism to unlock the gates and enable the cow to push them to an exit open mode. When the cow has cleared the gates, they automatically rotate by gravity back toward the closed mode. A pawl on a bar connecting the gates co-acts with the control mechanism to enable the gates to rotate past the closed mode all the way to the ready open mode. The cable mechanism includes a reversing mechanism that enables the farmer to actuate the control mechanism in a consistent manner regardless of the side of the stall his milking station is located.

Abstract: An improved portable squeeze chute apparatus and method includes a chute having an entrance end, an exit end, opposing sidewalls, a base, and a superstructure. Each of the sidewalls has an openable upper panel and lower panel for accessing upper portions and lower portions, respectively, of an animal positioned in the chute. Each of the sidewalls is selectively pivotable about a plurality of generally horizontal axes in order to immobilize lateral movement of an animal positioned in the chute. An exit gate having a neck clamp, positioned at the exit end of the chute, has interconnected neck clamp side portions for selectively clamping the animal's neck. An entrance gate has interconnected entrance gate side portions for selectively preventing the animal from exiting rearwardly from the chute. Various portions of the apparatus are each controllable by a respective hydraulic piston and two-way valve arrangement. Special mountings are provided which are adapted to reduce noise generated by operation of the apparatus. Transducers of an electronic scale are sandwiched between the base and an substructure for weighing the animal positioned in the chute. A plurality of spacers protect the transducers as the apparatus is being transported.

Abstract: A livestock headgate comprises a rectangular frame adapted for positioning at the open end of a livestock chute. A pair of opposed neck-engaging bars are pivotally supported on the bottom of the frame and are spring-biased toward open positions whereby livestock are permitted to pass through the gate. A chain and pulley system is mounted at the top of the frame and is adapted to draw the neck-engaging bars into closely spaced closed positions. The chain and pulley system is actuated by a lever which operates by toggle action to retain the neck-engaging bars in the closed positions. The actuating lever is supported on a spring-biased plate and is therefore adapted to close and retain the neck-engaging bars even though the bars are prevented from moving to the fully closed positions.
