    摘要: A system manager for use with an interactive cable system. The cable system has (i) an information service network for delivering information services to subscriber televisions, (ii) a plurality of home interface controllers, each home interface controller associated with a subscriber television and having a data transceiver operative over a data communications link to the headend, (iii) a plurality of subscriber selection devices, each such device associated with a home interface controller and in communication with the data transceiver thereof, for permitting subscriber interaction, and (iv) a plurality of interactive controllers, disposed at the headend, each interactive controller in assignable television communication over the network with a subscriber television and in data communication with a subscriber selection device. The system manager includes a call set-up server to receive and handle an initial data exchange with a calling home interface controller; a first service allocation server to pass communication and control associated with the calling home interface controller to one of a plurality of first application processors, with each first application processor being one of the interactive controllers, for providing a first information service; and a second service allocation server to pass communication and control associated with a home interface controller seeking a second information service to an available one of a plurality of second application processors, with each second application processor being one of the interactive controllers, to provide the second information service. The call-set up server, first service allocation server, and second service allocation server operate as independent processes.

    摘要: A bidirectional cable television system provides for transmission of signals from cable subscribers downlink in the same direction as the ensemble of television channels which the cable television system is already constructed to deliver. The subscriber signals may be transmitted over the cable in the blanking intervals of a cable television channel, using the T-NET technique described in U.S. Pat. No. 4,750,036. Alternatively, the signals may be carried over a dedicated channel, or transmitted cochannel along a cable television channel carrying ordinary programming by adding the subscriber information to alternating video frames in alternating polarity to achieve visual cancellation. The subscriber signals are collected after the last distribution line amplifier in the cable downlink. The collected signals are transmitted to a central receiver via wireless or other customary means such as a modem. The collected signals may alternatively be transmitted over the air to the central receiver in the blanking intervals of a broadcast television channel using the T-NET technique.

    摘要: An interactive television information system coupled to a cable television system having a headend for supplying information services and an information service distribution network for delivering information services to subscriber televisions. Each subscriber television is associated with a home interface controller. The home interface controllers receive the television information signals and include a data transceiver for data communications. A subscriber selection device associated with a home interface controller permits subscriber interaction through the data transceiver with an assigned interactive controller from a plurality of interactive controllers. The assigned interactive controller is in communication with the information sources and in television communication with its assigned home interface controller. Selection of an information source nay be made through channel selection of an apparent channel from any of a first group of apparent channels and a second group of apparent channels. Different information services on different apparent channels from the first group of apparent channels are provided to a given home interface controller via the same television information signal as the subscriber changes channel selection from one of the apparent channels in the first group of apparent channels to another apparent channel in the first group of apparent channels. To receive apparent channels from the second group of apparent channels, a home interface controller simply selects the television information signal at its input corresponding to the selected channel.

    摘要: An interactive cable television system having a plurality of feeder servers, a plurality of home interface controllers and a feeder port. Home interface controllers are each equipped with a radio frequency input and a data communications link with a receiver and transmitter in the feeder port. A node control in communication with the feeder port determines whether a home interface controller is active and then assigns a feeder server to it. The feeder server provides one of a plurality of information signals from a headend depending on a selection input. Digitally compressed video signals are provided at the headend. The digitally compressed video signals can be provided by a modulator means at a carrier frequency greater than the upper frequency limit for carrying analog television signals with acceptable quality on the cable system.The cable television system may make use of a scrambler that maintains the chrome subcarrier on a sync-stripped output signal at all times including the period of vertical retrace. The sync-stripped output signal is modulated at a first carrier frequency and the sync-signal is modulated at a second carrier frequency. A corresponding decoder is provided for receiving scrambled signals and restoring the sync-signal to restore the television signal.

    摘要: A signal substitution system for cable television applies substitute television program signals in at least one substitute channel to the transmission cable along with signal substitution control signals. The signal substitution control signals include a plurality of different terminal command signals and a plurality of different event command signals. Each of the terminal command signals includes a respective panelist address signal for identifying a respective panelist receiving station and a plurality of event identification signals identifying respective events. Each of the event command signals includes a respective event address signal corresponding to a respective event and a normal channel identification signal for identifying a normal channel into which a substitute television program is to be switched. A controller at each panelist receiving station responds to the signal substitution control signals by selectively switching a substitute television program into a normal channel. The controller stores event signals corresponding to the event identification signals of the respective terminal command signal. When a received event address signal corresponds to a local event address signal and the received normal channel identification signal corresponds to a channel select signal selected by the viewer, a substitute channel is substituted for the channel selected by the viewer for a period determined by the event command signals.
