An inductorless quadrature demodulator for frequency modulated signals is disclosed. A limited FM signal is passed through an active filter (26) and a phase shift network (30) to produce a quadrature signal. The limited FM signal is compared with the quadrature signal in an EXCLUSIVE OR gate (24) and then low pass filtered (36) to obtain recovered audio. The active filter (26) includes a transconductance amplifier (60) whose center frequency can be adjusted by appropriate adjustment of the amplifier's bias current. The bias current is temperature compensated to allow operation of the demodulator over a wide temperature range.

An FM detector is constructed of a phase shift network and an analog multiplier. The analog multiplier includes a differential amplifier circuit and a phase detector circuit. The differential amplifier circuit includes differential pair transistors which are driven by FM intermediate frequency signals. One of the differential pair transistors has another transistor connected thereto which is also driven by the FM intermediate frequency signal. A collector signal of either one of the differential pair transistors is applied to the phase detector circuit through the phase shift network, while a collector signal of the other transistor is directly applied to the phase detector circuit. An emitter of the one transistor and an emitter of the other transistor are connected through resistors, whereby the signal-to-noise ratio of the FM detector is improved.

A phase detector circuit in which the rectifying elements conduct for a fraction of the reference period and therein determine the relative phase difference between an unknown input signal and a reference signal. This is primarily accomplished by obtaining from the reference signal switching functions that are of fractional duty cycle as compared to the unknown signal. The output of this fractional duty cycle phase detector is a DC voltage whose level is proportional to the phase difference between the reference and the unknown input signal.

In a quadrature FM detector, demodulation is performed by a product detector which multiplies an amplitude limited FM modulated information signal by a version of the amplitude limited FM modulated information signal which has been phase shifted by a phase shifting network including a single tuned LC circuit. In order to assure that the LC circuit is tuned to the carrier frequency of the FM signal, the LC circuit is tuned by a variable impedance device in response to a control signal generated by a bus controlled DAC. The control signal is coupled to the variable impedance device at the same pin of an integrated circuit where the LC circuit is coupled to the demodulator.

The quadrant multiplier circuit includes transistor pairs and outputs phase differences respectively of input data signals and clock signals. The DC compensation circuit has a variable current source and two transistor pairs whose collectors are connected respectively to a positive phase output and a reverse phase output from said quadrant multiplier circuit and whose emitters are connected to said variable current source. When the intermediate frequency carrier signal is used in the phase detector, a second tuned circuit is used therein and buffering between the two tuned circuits prevents interaction therebetween.

A phase comparator suitable for integrated circuit fabrication is disclosed wherein each one of a pair of differential amplifiers periodically couples an input signal to the output of the comparator through a degenerative feedback arranged high gain amplifier selectively in accordance with a periodic reference signal. During one-half period of the reference signal, the input signal is coupled to the output of the comparator with a gain of substantially +1 and during the other half period of the reference signal the input signal is coupled to the output of the comparator with a gain of substantially -1. With such an arrangement the output voltage produced at the output of the phase comparator has an average value substantially proportional to the phase angle between the reference signal and the input signal. The use of a switched pair of differential amplifiers together with a degenerative feedback arranged high gain amplifier provides for a phase comparator suitable for integrated circuit fabrication.

A full-wave rectifier circuit which comprises a differential amplifier stage, and a matrix network consisting of a plurality of resistances connected in series in the shape of an octagonal loop. The resistance matrix network receives two input signals and the inverted signals thereof, and produces a sum or a difference signal therefrom and the inverted signal thereof. The resulting signals are delivered onto one side of the differential amplifier stage, and are compared with a reference voltage signal impressed onto the other side of the differential amplifier stage. Thus, the sum or difference signal derived from the two input signals is finally full wave rectified.
