    摘要: A spark plug is disclosed and includes a metal tube which interiorly defines an axis and is externally-threaded for engagement with an engine block. An insulating has a portion which is disposed inside the tube and extends therebeyond. A positive electrode extends through the insulator and projects beyond the extending portion of the insulator. An annular ground electrode is coupled to the tube. The electrodes are configured such that a spark gap defined therebetween has an elongate channel which opens axially and away from the insulator and is substantially unobstructed in the axial direction. The ground defines a void having a central portion occupied by the positive electrode in use, an annular channel surrounding the central portion, and a plurality of lobes, each being positioned with respect to the central portion in a manner analogous to the placement of the planet gears with respect to the sun gear in a planetary gear arrangement.

    摘要: The plug comprises a nut, a coupling extending from the nut and adapted to receive an ignition wire and an insulator extending from the nut and away from the coupling. A positive electrode extends through the insulator. An externally-threaded tubular portion extends from the nut in surrounding relation to the insulator and terminating, short of the insulator end, in a cap that is disposed in spaced relation to the insulator. The cap defines a void having: a central portion into which the positive electrode extends; an annular channel surrounding the central portion; and a plurality of lobes, each positioned with respect to the central portion as the planet gears are positioned with respect to the sun gear in a planetary gear. The cap has a central surface that is axially spaced from the insulator and a convex surface that surrounds and extends to the central surface.

    摘要: Pre-cut spark plugs with trimmed L-shaped electrodes are used in the racing industry for engines that are fueled by racing fuels such as high octane racing fuels and/or nitrous oxide or nitro methane, thus keeping the engine from detonating prematurely. However these spark plugs are expensive. Disclosed herein is a jig that trims the end of a standard commercial spark plug's L-shaped-electrode. The jig has a body and a finger screw that secures the spark plug body while exposing the L-shaped electrode. The spark plug is secured in the jig, and the jig secured in a vise so that a user may manually employ a saw such as a hacksaw to trim the end of the L-shaped electrode at a precise distance from the electrode's end that match the pre-cut spark plug's trimmed L-shaped electrode. This saves the user considerable expense.

    摘要: In an ignition electrode arrangement for a cyclinder in an internal combustion engine, for example at Otto engine, a cyclinder head (3) bears a first electrode (7) and a second electrode (8) which interact with one another. At least the first electrode (7) is arranged on an ignition means (6) fastened in the cyclinder head. According to the invention, the second electrode (8) is movable relative to the cyclinder head (3) and the first electrode (7) in order to make it possible to change the spark gap. The second electrode (8) can be mounted on the cyclinder head (3) itself or on the ignition device (6). The size of the spark gap is controlled during operation by the ignition system of the engine.

    摘要: In spark ignited engine configurations, it is common to provide a spark plug that has a spark gap that has dimension that will accommodate good starting capabilities for the engine. In some cases, this spark gap is larger than required for the engine to run efficiently, especially at high loads. As a result, the voltage required to bridge the gap when the engine is running at high loads is much higher than necessary and causes erosion of the electrode and a build up of deposits on the ground strap. Ultimately, this greatly reduces the life of the spark plug. The present invention provides a spark plug that utilizes an adjusting means that is connected to the electrode of the spark plug and functions to move the electrode with respect to the ground strap to adjust the gap therebetween. The adjusting means is responsive to the temperature of the spark plug which will vary with engine loads or an increase in pressure within the combustion chamber.
