摘要： A roller band sensor includes a housing having a cavity including a pair of spaced generally parallel side walls joined by proximal and distal end walls. A pair of bands of flexible spring material within the housing cavity are of generally elongate shape, with their adjacent abutting portions commonly secured to each other and their respective remote portions bearing against and secured to a respective side wall to divide each band into forward and rearward end loops. The forward end loops each include symmetrical shape tapered sections contiguous the secured remote portions and the rearward end loops each include symmetrical shape tapered sections contiguous their secured adjacent portions to obtain a predetermined spring rate and preload normally locating the bands in a preload position unless the bands are subjected to a predetermined velocity or acceleration change whereupon the bands concurrently roll relative to each other and along their respective side walls toward the distal end wall and into bridging engagement with contact structure.

摘要： A velocity measuring apparatus is provided with means for increasing the rotational moment of inertia of a roller which displaces a band of electroconductive material against a preselected resisting force and into contact with a conductive member. The extent of displacement necessary for contacting the band with the conductive member is thereby decreased without changing the magnitude of the preselected resisting force. The velocity measuring apparatus is highly reliable in operation and is sufficiently compact to be economically installed in a limited space.

摘要： A pair of elongated movable contact members commonly secured to the bands between the adjacent portions thereof. The contact members project toward the proximal end wall of the sensor recess and are provided with flared proximal free end portions. The angularly related walls of a generally V shaped fixed contact project from the distal end wall of the sensor recess and are engaged by the movable contact members at actuated position. The end portions of the movable contact members laterally expand and the walls of the fixed contact laterally contract to absorb the energy of the moving mass of the sensor and eliminate contact bounce while maintaining electrical contact between the contact members to close an electrical control circuit. The distal end portions of the contact members may engage the distal end wall of the housing or an adjustable set screw to locate the roller bands and movable contact members in preload or unactuated position.

摘要： There is described a crash switch which can sense acceleration forces that operate for some period of time such that the product of acceleration and time exceeds some predetermined level before the switch is actuated. The switch utilizes rollers supported by a band wrapped around the rollers, in which movement of the rollers along the band actuates switch contacts to signal movement of the rollers over a predetermined distance. In one modification, change in the center of gravity of the rollers is used to shift the direction of maximum sensitivity to the accelerating force. A single calibration adjustment, by shifting the initial position of the rollers, controls both the level of acceleration force required to move the rollers and the acceleration-time product level required to trigger the switch to the nominal design levels.

摘要： A roller-band device which utilizes a single roller with a flexible band encircling it and having its ends extending generally in opposite directions therefrom. The band has complimentary cutout and solid portions, preferably a pair of spaced leg portions at one end of the band and a tongue portion disposed between and having a width somewhat less than the space between the two leg portions at the other end whereby the band is wrapped around the roller and the tongue passes between the spaced legs without touching them. The roller and band are movable together along a predetermined path and may be used for performing various electrical switching functions. Opposite ends of the band decline from the plane on which the roller moves and form an acute angle therewith so that a high-contact force is obtained between contact surfaces on the roller and on the frame. A unique frame and housing means renders the device easily assembled and calibrated and then encloses the device. Also disclosed is a roller-band device with multiple rollers spaced along a common band.

The failsafe cut out or weak portion breaks when the sensor is subjected to an excessive acceleration so that the sensor fails in an open circuit (non-conducting) state permanently.

摘要： A rolamite sensor includes a formed sheet metal base attached to a metal chassis. One surface of the sheet metal base acts as a guide surface for a roller. A thin metal foil band is wrapped around the roller and has its ends welded to the base underneath the base. The roller is biased into a first position and is rollable on the guide surface from its first position under an applied force to cause the band to engage a firing contact. A single pin connected to the firing contact extends through the chassis and is electrically insulated from the chassis. The pin and chassis are connected to opposite electric potentials in the vehicle. When the band engages the firing contact, an electrical circuit is completed through the pin, the firing contact, the band, the base, and the chassis to activate a vehicle safety apparatus. The sheet metal base includes a calibration tab which sets the first position of the roller along the guide surface. The tab may be physically bent to select the distance through which the roller needs to travel to complete the electrical circuit.
