An erasure system for magnetic information storage media is disclosed by which magnetic media, such as computer, video and audio tapes, cassettes and discs, can be thoroughly erased. The system uses high energy product permanent magnets preferably positioned so that their poles repel one another to induce "bucking magnetic fields" having lines of force active in the three spatial planes and parallel or tangential to the recorded signal track on the media being erased. The DC magnetic field thus applied causes the DC erasure of the media. The AC erasure effect comes about through the relative movement of the media through fixed magnetic fields of opposite polarity, causing the magnetic media to be subjected to a reversing polarity of magnetic saturation. The magnet configurations can be adjusted for use on helically recorded magnetic media, in addition to cross-field and conventional recording techniques.

Alternate S- and N-poles are disposed on a multipolar erasing head in the direction of a relative movement of the multipolar erasing head to a magnetic recording medium. The multipolar erasing head includes at least one region where the distances between adjacent magnetic poles of the same polarity are successively shortened in the direction for successively erasing the information recorded on the recording medium. A method and apparatus for manufacturing such an erasing head are also disclosed.

The invention contemplates at least one plurality of poles of selected configuration, adapted to receive a magnetic medium in magnetic bridging relation. A second plurality of poles of selected configuration may be disposed in confronting relation to the first plurality, in selected orientation therewith, defining therebetween a gap of selected dimensions and shape for receiving therethrough the magnetic medium. Accordingly, a magnetic medium passing along a preselected path adjacent the single plurality of poles, or through the gap between the confronting plurality of poles, experiences a spatially varying, symmetrical, magnetic field of selectable constant or varying magnitude. Several arrangements and various modifications are contemplated within the invention concepts to effect the desired operating parameters.

An erasing head for magnetic recording medium by magnetizing said recording medium with a permanent magnet is improved by a ferrite head body having a slider plane wider than a track to be erased, and, a magnetic metal thin film covering said slider plane. Said magnetic thin film solves the problem caused by undesired natural magnetization of a permanent magnet, so as to improve the erase ratio and S/N ratio, and the use of slider plane wider than that of a track simplifies producing process of the head since no step is provided between the track to be erased and neighboring track, and no polishing process for smoothing said step is required.

A magnetic erasing head for erasing a magnetic recording media such as magnetic tape. The device has a head surface defined to make sliding contact with the tape surface. The head surface includes a permanent magnet material and a high permeability material. The permanent magnet material defines the portion of the head surface extending from the inlet side toward the exit side thereof for the sliding tape and is magnetized to include portions which have alternate polarities and which have a field strength which gradually decrease from the inlet side to the exit side of the head surface. The high permeability material defines a portion of the head surface with a predetermined length from the exit side toward the inlet side and with a width of about one-half of the recording track of the tape. The high permeability material is positioned substantially in alignment with the center of the recording track. Thus, the magnetic tape erased by the erasing head does not induce secondary harmonic distortion due to mutual cancellation of residual magnetism.

The magnet produces a magnetic flux that extends through a tape contact zone extending across a portion of the outer surface of the housing and the gap to erase content on the tape medium as the tape guide rollers guide the tape medium across the housing through the tape contact zone.

Embodiments of the invention prevent a spindle motor from stopping rotation while data on a magnetic disk is being erased by using a permanent magnet. In one embodiment, data in the whole area of the magnetic disk is erased as a consequence of the magnetic disk rotating in the magnetic field of the permanent magnet located so as to face a part of the magnetic disk. A back yoke is located so as to face a base. The back yoke gives a magnetic force to the spindle motor in the opposite direction of the magnetic force of the erasing permanent magnet so that the fluid dynamic bearing spindle motor can retain the rotation as required without stopping rotation.
