A hologram array is utilized having a plurality of adjacent holograms which are illuminated at an acute angle by laser diodes. Each laser diode output is modulated by an information source such as a computer output or the like. The outputs of the hologram array leave the hologram at an acute angle such that the focal points of the beams leaving the hologram array are focused on the object surface (a photoreceptor or the like). Closely controlled spacing of the outputs of the holograms is achieved by appropriate spacing of the holograms. In order to provide two-dimensional scanning, an appropriate combination of spherical and cylindrical lenses may be utilized together with a moving polygonal mirror to move the output beams from the hologram across the surface of the photoreceptor.

A hologon scanning system which generates an essentially bow-free scan line or lines across a surface using a planar, and preferably a holographic, grating disposed in a holding assembly which is rotated about an axis. The surface of the grating is at a constant angle of incidence with respect to a collimated beam of laser light propagating along the axis of rotation. The grating period for the wavelength of the laser beam and for the coordinate system associated with the rotating grating provides a diffraction angle from the grating which is constant with rotation angle; the diffracted beam being perpendicular to the rotation axis. An essentially bow-free, straight scan line is obtained across the receptor surface which may be a flat image plane or a cylindrical image plane having its axis along the axis of rotation of the grating. The beam scan angle across the receptor surface is equal to the angle of rotation of the grating, rather than being related to the angle of rotation by a factor approximately equal to the ratio of wavelength of the laser light to the grating period.

The laser beams are modulated by color image signals representative of respective differently colored images. As the scanning medium rotates, it deflects the applied laser beams and emits them as the scanning light beams. By the former type holographic diffraction grating a single combined light beam in which the original light beams are fully merged into a single light beam is obtained, and by the latter type grating the original light beams are diffracted into collimated, converging or diverging beams.

A scanning apparatus and method for scanning a beam of light incorporate an optical system in which a rotatable wheel has a plurality of light deflecting facets on the periphery of the wheel. The incoming light beam is reflected by a routing mirror or a routing beam splitter cube onto a front face of a facet as that facet is rotated in line with the routing element. The beam is deflected as it makes its first pass through the facet, and a porro prism redirects the deflected beam back through the rotating facet so that the beam makes two passes through each facet rotating past the routing element. The scanning action is produced by the rotation of the facet in the path of both passes of the beam through the facet. The net result cancels the angular motion of the beam in one direction and adds to the angular motion in the orthogonal direction. Scanning action as produced by one facet is repeated for each facet located on the periphery of the wheel.

An extended prism provides a variable incident angle surface for refracting the incident curvilinear configuration into substantially a linear scan path on an object surface.
