The invention relates to the preparation of photographic dispersions. The method of the invention consists in preparing a fluid dispersion of an additive in a colloid, congealing the resulting dispersion, subdividing the resulting congealed dispersion into particles, washing the resulting particles, and adding to them a solution of biocide. A dispersion is thus obtained that is protected against the proliferation of micro-organisms during storage.

Hydrophilic colloid compositions are described which may form part of a light-sensitive silver halide element, the said compositions comprising a dihalo- or trihalo-ethylcarbonate of the formula ##STR1## wherein X is halogen, X' is halogen or hydrogen and each of R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are an alkyl or aryl group, in order to inhibit growth of bacteria and fungi, to protect the hydrophilic colloid against degeneration and/or to improve the stability of dispersed photographic ingredients.
