    摘要: A system and method for controllably chirping electromagnetic radiation from a radiation source includes an optical cavity arrangement. The optical cavity arrangement enables electromagnetic radiation to be produced with a substantially linear chirp rate and a configurable period. By selectively injecting electromagnetic radiation into the optical cavity, the electromagnetic radiation may be produced with a single resonant mode that is frequency shifted at the substantially linear chirp rate. Producing the electromagnetic radiation with a single resonant mode may increase the coherence length of the electromagnetic radiation, which may be advantageous when the electromagnetic radiation is implemented in various applications. For example, the electromagnetic radiation produced by the optical cavity arrangement may enhance a range, speed, accuracy, and/or other aspects of a laser radar system.

For this, it is impossible to accurately evaluate the characteristic of the MZ interferometers. The present invention does not use the 0-degree component normally having the highest intensity. That is, the characteristic of the MZ interferometers are evaluated by using a side band intensity of the component other than the 0-degree component.

    摘要: An optical modulation device includes: an optical splitter for splitting input light into a first input beam and a second input beam; an optical intensity modulator for modulating the intensity of the first input beam in response to a modulating signal; a variable optical phase shifter for shifting the phase of the second input beam; and an optical combiner for combining an output beam of the optical intensity modulator and an output beam of the variable optical phase shifter into a combined beam and outputting the combined beam. The amount of phase shift produced by the variable optical phase shifter is externally controlled.

    摘要: An optical pulse position modulator includes a substrate with parallel first and second sides, the substrate including a first waveguide channel and a parallel second waveguide channel orthogonal to the first and second sides, a linear chirped grating orthogonal to and upon the first and second waveguide channels, and at least a first electrode along the first waveguide channel to apply a voltage modulation thereto. A first optical circulator has a first port coupled to a pulsed optical carrier signal, and a second port coupled to the first waveguide channel on the first side of the substrate, and a second optical circulator has a fourth port coupled to the third port of the first optical circulator, and a fifth port coupled to the second waveguide channel on the second side of the substrate. An output of the second waveguide channel is a position modulated optical pulse signal.

    摘要: An optical modulator for producing a modulated optical output having a pre-determined frequency chirp is provided. The optical modulator includes an optical splitting device configured to receive and split an optical input signal to be modulated into two optical signals to pass along two waveguide arms made of electro-optic material and an optical combining device configured to receive and combine the two optical signals into said modulated optical output. At least one electrode pair is associated with each waveguide arm, and is electrically connected in series such as to modulate the phase of said optical signals in antiphase in response to a single electrical signal applied thereto. The modulator further includes a capacitive element connected to the electrode pair of one arm such as to modify the division of the single electrical signal such that the magnitude of the electrical signal across the electrode pair of one arm is different to that across the electrode pair of the other arm, thereby imparting the pre-determined frequency chirp in the modulated optical output.

    摘要: A device whereby one or more bands of optical wavelengths may be selected for further transmission. All light within the optical bandwidth of operation is first coupled from the core mode of an optical fiber to a specific cladding mode by a chirped broadband cladding mode coupler. These cladding mode lightwaves then enter a narrow-band core mode coupler whereby selected optical bands of wavelengths are re-coupled back into the core of the optical fiber. The chirped broadband cladding mode coupler is isolated from the narrow-band core mode coupler by an acoustic absorber to limit the acoustic interaction between them.
