A projectile within the open neck to seal the cavity so the bullet is released when the propellant is primed and ignited. The projectile has a proximate end releasably secured within the neck of the casing facing the cavity and exposed to the forces generated by ignited propellant. The remote end of the projectile is formed by a lead core while the proximate end has a transverse surface and is at least partially formed of an amorphous metallic alloy having properties of bulk metallic glass (BMG). Liquid metal alloy can also be used at the interface of a propellant chamber in a bore of a cannon and a cartridge-free projectile.

Disclosed is a method for manufacturing a fiber-reinforced composite sabot for use in APFSDS (Armor Piercing Fin Stabilized Discarding Sabot) wherein a plurality of fiber mats are laminated instead of one-directional prepreg ply and whole part is reinforced by stitching through long fiber bundle in order to enhance circumferential shear strength, and high quality fiber-reinforced composite sabot is manufactured in a short time using resin-injection vacuum assisted resin transfer molding after stitching.

Disclosed is a method for manufacturing a fiber-reinforced composite sabot for use in APFSDS (Armor Piercing Fin Stabilized Discarding Sabot), wherein both Band lamination and Hoop lamination are used in manufacturing a polymer based FRP( Fiber Reinforced Plastic) for use in the sabot in order to prevent the prepreg delamination in the circumferential direction caused by the radial lamination. The method for manufacturing a fiber-reinforced composite sabot of the present invention comprises the steps of a sub-segment forming step, a piece forming step and a sabot forming step, and the lamination is carried out with improved segment lamination form preventing the damage in the 120 degree surface in the process of treating the sabot.

A sabot-type cartridge has a one-piece body of thermoplastic material and a standard body configuration, such as that of a .44 Magnum, with a propellant chamber, primer, and an integral sabot of full caliber. The sabot is generally hollow, cylindrical in configuration, with radially extending ribs, separated by longitudinal grooves, the ribs supporting and centering a sub-caliber projectile, such as a .22 caliber. The annular mouth of the sabot is co-planar with the tip of the projectile to form a tapered funnel-like air inlet. A gas-actuated cutter means, in the form of a normally cupped metal member, is interposed between the projectile and the propellant chamber. There are sharp cutting edges on the multiple lobes of the member to slice the sabot free of the cartridge upon detonation of the propellant. As the sabot exits from the muzzle of the firearm, air pressure expands the sabot, in the manner of a spring collet, and releases the projectile. The invention is intended to, but not limited to, provide a family of sub-caliber cartridges, which may be loaded into, and fired from standard firearms currently manufactured by others.

From a plurality of sabots, a sabot is provided for shrouding a sub-caliber projectile to form a launch package in a gun bore for acceleration by an actuator behind the projectile. The sabot includes a forecastle, an aft bulkhead and a waist. The forecastle separates the projectile from the gun bore. The aft bulkhead abuts against the actuator. The waist connects the forecastle and the bulkhead by a radial spar that supports inner and outer flanges. The inner flange mechanically engages the projectile, and in preferred embodiments is concave. The gun bore is optimized as a pair of electromagnetic rails.
