    Abstract: A mechanical lock of the type where as spring wound about a rod normally grips the rod against axial movement through a lock housing is improved by providing a lightly scored surface finish on contacting surfaces of the rod and the spring, the scoring being transverse to the rod and excluding contacting surfaces of adjacent coils of the spring for enhanced frictional resistance to axial sliding displacement of the rod through the spring while maintaining low friction unwinding of the spring.

    Abstract: A mechanical lock normally preventing axial motion of a rod with respect to a housing includes a coil spring which normally encircles and grips the rod tightly. The coil spring is mounted on the rod between a fixed bushing and a rotatable bushing. The two bushings are identical and interchangeable to reduce the cost and complexity of the device. The rotatable bushing is rotated by an actuating lever to unwind the spring so as to increase its diameter and thereby to release its grip on the rod. Both the fixed bushing and the rotatable bushing include beveled faces which permit the last few turns at both ends of the spring to become cocked on the rod to provide a true locking engagement with the rod. The last few turns of the spring adjacent the rotatable bushing are immediately released by a minimum of rotation of the bushing since it is not necessary for the unwinding of the spring to be transmitted through the entire length of the spring.

    Abstract: A telescoping pipe fitting has a telescoping pipe body with an inner pipe and an outer pipe movably sleeved outside the inner pipe. One end of the inner pipe is at least provided with two non-slip sheets. An elastic member configured to extrude the non-slip sheets to stretch outwards and cling to the inner wall of the outer pipe is positioned between the non-slip sheets. The length of the telescoping pipe fitting can be changed only when a user applies an external force that overcomes the frictional force between the inner pipe and the outer pipe. When the external force is withdrawn, the entire length of the telescoping pipe fitting is fixed and unchanged.

    Abstract: A mechanical lock of the type in which axial translational movement of a rod is prevented by a coil spring which encircles the rod and grips it and being readily released by application of a relatively small force through a relatively short stroke, thereby permitting the mechanical lock to be controlled by a pushbutton control. Rotating bushings adjacent the ends of the springs have beveled faces which cause the locking turns at the ends of the spring to become cocked on the rod to provide a true locking action. The device is unlocked by rotation of the rotating bushings, which unwind the locking turns of the spring, thereby releasing the grip of the spring on the rod. The rotating bushings are rotated in opposite directions by actuating levers which extend outside of the housing of the device. The actuating levers are provided with rollers and are located at the same station along the axis of the rod. A symmetrical wedge-shaped cam is mounted so that it can be drawn axially between the rollers, forcing them apart circumferentially and thereby rotating the actuating lever about the axis of the rod. The wedge-shaped cam is drawn in an axial direction by a cable which is connected to the pushbutton control. The structure of the device simplifies its assembly, thereby reducing the production cost.

    Abstract: A mechanical lock normally preventing axial motion of a rod with respect to a housing sleeve that surrounds the rod includes a coil spring whose diameter is slightly less than the diameter of the rod so that the coil spring normally encircles and grips the rod tightly. The coil spring is mounted on the rod between a bushing fixed to the housing sleeve at one end of the spring and a second bushing that is rotatable with respect to the housing at the other end of the spring. The rotary bushing is rotated by an actuating lever to unwind the spring so as to increase its diameter and thereby to release its grip on the rod. Both the fixed bushing and the rotatable bushing include beveled faces which permit the last few turns at both ends of the spring to become cocked on the rod to provide a true locking engagement with the rod. The last few turns of the spring adjacent the rotatable bushing are immediately released by a minimum of rotation of the bushing since it is not necessary for the unwinding of the spring to be transmitted through the entire length of the spring. Because the spring is shorter than in prior locks, the entire device is shorter and accordingly more resistant to bending and lighter in weight. The structure of the device simplifies its assembly and this, along with its reduced length appreciably reduces the cost of producing the device.

    Abstract: The present invention involves a friction lock device which utilizes one or more friction springs coaxially disposed about a translating rod within an elongated housing. Bias bushings are provided for slidably supporting the rod adjacent one end of each spring. Each bushing defines a sloped shoulder against which the friction spring bears, with the angle of the shoulder calibrated such that the spring is canted to provide a holding force up to a predetermined axial force on the rod, and to permit the rod to slip relative to the spring at greater axial forces without disturbing the integrity of the spring or its coils. The device includes a release or actuation mechanism to partially unwind the springs, thereby reducing the gripping force of the springs and freeing the rod to slide through the springs.
