The yarn consumption speed is calculated, then the yarn consumption speed is compared with a predetermined threshold speed, and if the calculated consumption speed overcomes the predetermined threshold value, the tension control block is enabled, while, if the calculated consumption speed is lower than the threshold value, the tension control block is disabled and the last signal generated by the latter is maintained as braking signal, until the yarn consumption speed overcomes again the threshold value.

The present invention provides a method and apparatus which enables thread to be wound onto the motor driven storage drum of a thread storage and feeding device for a thread processing machine strictly continuously and uniformly with the aim of ensuring that the thread as wound off the thread supply bobbin is wound onto the storage drum in such a way that variations in the tension of the thread as pulled off the storage drum are eliminated. This is achieved by controlling the number of revolutions of the motor in response to a control signal which is derived from the thread intermediate supply on the drum and the actual thread consumption, i.e., the average speed of the thread leaving the drum.

A test signal is formed from and substantially synchronously with the object-output signal, and the signal level of the test signal is compared with an alarm threshold value representing a just barely acceptable deterioration level of the scanning conditions. An alarm signal is generated when the signal level of the test signal falls below a predetermined threshold value.

In a yarn feeder (2), the yarn feed may be effected by a yarn reserve (11) support spool (2), which is arranged to rotate by means of a motor (60). The yarn is taken up by and unwound from the spool as the latter rotates. Unwinding of the yarn reserve on the spool is not controlled. The size of the yarn reserve is monitored and yarn take-up is controlled accordingly. The unit also includes electrically contactless sensing and control devices (3), which are preferably located immediately adjacent to the rotary spool. The unit (3) is designed to sense the presence and quantity of yarn on the yarn reserve support surface (10) of the spool. The unit also controls the said motor.

The thread storage and supply arrangement comprises a storage drum having a peripheral thread storage surface onto which is to be wound a succession of adjoining turns of thread, the thread storage surface comprising a thread infeed region at one axial end of the storage surface and a thread outfeed region at the other axial end. A thread outfeed structure located at the thread outfeed region feeds off the storage drum thread which is to be pulled off. The peripheral storage surface, at the thread infeed region thereof, curves radially inward in the direction from the infeed to the outfeed region and, at the thread outfeed region thereof, curves radially outward in the direction from the infeed to the outfeed region. Relative rotation between the storage drum, on the one hand, and the infeed and outfeed structures, on the other hand, is effected by a controllable drive motor or by a controllable coupling which can be coupled to a continuously operated drive motor.
