The positioning of the warp yarns is one potential cause of an increase or a decrease of potential energy in the shed forming device. One or several elements is added to compensate, by their change of state, partly or entirely for the decrease or increase of potential energy which is produced in the shed forming device by the positioning of the warp yarns. The change of state of the elements is effectuated without any coupling with the positioning of individual warn yarns. A weaving machine uses such a shed forming device.

A lifting device (50), (51) moves the shed-forming elements (1) up and down. At least one actuator (40)-(44), (80), (83) is provided for selectively influencing the shed-forming element (1), so that it is either kept at a fixed height, or is moved by means of the lifting device (50), (51). The element (1) has at least one selection body (7), (8), (9) which, for said selective influencing, may be moved into first or second stable positions, as desired, by an actuator (40)-(44), (80), (83) forming a shed-forming element (1) in itself. It may also be formed as a device without a pulley. Because the positions of the selection body are stable, their position may be changed by a single temporal influence by the actuator making the device energy efficient.

An actuator is connected to a movable holding element for moving the element to a holding position and a non-holding position. In the holding position the element holds the shed forming device at a fixed height. A stop is connected to the element for supporting the holding element when it is in the holding position. Because of this the holding element is held on the stop by the shed forming mechanism. Thus, the contact pressure between the shed forming means and the holding element is produced by the hook load itself allowing for a support for the holding element to remain unstressed.
