The preparation, structure, and properties of solid inorganic materials containing at least one transition element, aluminum, boron and oxygen are described. Also described is the use of such materials in catalytic compositions for the conversion of organic compounds. In particular, new materials comprising(a) crystalline LnAl.sub.1.67+0.67X (B.sub.4 O.sub.10)O.sub.X, and(b) crystalline LnAl.sub.2.67+0.33Z (B.sub.4 O.sub.11)O.sub.Zwhere Ln is at least one transition element, X is a number ranging from 0 to 1, and Z is a number ranging from 0 to 2, each crystalline phase having a characteristic X-ray diffraction pattern are described as well as the use of such materials in various catalyzed processes including oxidative dehydrogenation of hydrocarbons and oxygen-containing hydrocarbons, dehydrogenation to functionalize alkylaromatic compounds, and ammoxidation of alkylaromatic compounds. Also, these new crystalline rare earth aluminum borates exhibit a variety of physical properties that make their use as optical materials attractive, including uses for optical frequency conversion, fluorescence, and laser materials.

A thin film electroluminescent element has a substrate, a transparent electrode formed on the substrate, a luminescent film wherein two kinds of luminescent centers are distributed in layers within a basic luminescent material, formed on the transparent electrode through an insulating film, and a back electrode formed on the luminescent film through another insulating film. The luminescent film of this thin film electroluminescent element can emit white light of excellent tone, including lights of three primary colors with sufficiently large luminous intensity.

The white light-emitting glass is a glass emitting fluorescence at a region having a wavelength of 380 nm to 750 nm by excitation light with a wavelength of 240 nm to 405 nm, not containing crystal, and containing SnOx (where x=1 to 2, typically x=1 or 2), P2O5, and MnOy (where y=1 to 2, typically y=1 or 2). The screen contains a phosphor having a hafnia host containing zirconia in concentrations higher than those found in optical grade hafnia.
