The phosphor layer includes a fluorescent material including a first phosphor that at least partially converts energy emitted by an excitation source, which emits ultraviolet having a wavelength of about 365 nm, to a first emission spectrum that is different from the energy, and a second phosphor that at least partially converts the first emission spectrum to a second emission spectrum. Peak wavelengths of the emission spectrum of the first and second phosphors have a relation of complementary colors so that when the light created due to the peak wavelengths of the first and second phosphors are mixed, the resulting light is in the white region.

Provided is a phosphate nano phosphor with a mean particle diameter of 100 to 3000 nm. Also provided is a method of preparing a nano phosphor, the method comprising: dissolving two or more species of metal precursor compounds in water, and then adjusting the pH to prepare an aqueous solution of pH 4-10; coprecipitating the aqueous solution by mixing with a phosphate precursor aqueous solution with the pH adjusted to 7-12; and redispersing the particles obtained from the coprecipitation in water or polyol solvent, and then heat treating the particles. The phosphate nano phosphor according to the present invention has superior light emission efficiency compared with conventional nano phosphors.

A method is disclosed for producing alkaline earth halophosphate stir-in phosphors which comprises forming a mixture of about 55% to 75% calcium monohydrogen phosphate, about 15% to 35% calcium carbonate, about 2% to 20% ammonium chloride, about 1% to 15% manganese carbonate, about 1% to 15% antimony trioxide, and about 2% to 10% by weight calcium fluoride, wherein the average particle size of the calcium monohydrogen phosphate by Fisher subseive size is about 4.6 to 6.8 micrometers in diameter and the 50% Coulter Counter size is about 9.0 to 11.5, firing in a non-reacting atmosphere at 600.degree. C. to 1300.degree. C., milling in acid, wet screening through a first screen of greater than 300 mesh, removing the acid, suspending the material in water, screening through a second screen of greater than 350 mesh, adding base to form a slurry, removing the liquid phase from the slurried phosphor material, drying, transferring the material by vacuum to holding means, and transferring the material by gravity from the holding means to a vibratory feeder, transferring the material from the vibratory feeder by gravity to a third screen of greater than 350 mesh, and passing the material through the third screen wherein vacuum pulls the material to and through the screen and at the same time a flow of air behind the third screen results in vibration of the particles of the material as they pass through the third screen, and thereafter passing the particles under vacuum to collecting means.

A fluorescent lamp utilizing a four component phosphor combination is provided producing efficient white color illumination at a lower cost than conventional phosphor coatings of the same type. A lamp color temperature of approximately 3500.degree. K. is produced with a blend containing two strontium apatite phosphors, one strontium orthophosphate phosphor and a calcium haloapatite phosphor. The strontium phosphors are blended in weight proportions to match the white color emission point of the calcium haloapatite phosphor component in said blend.

Calcium fluorophosphate phosphor co-activated by specific levels of antimony and manganese emits in a narrow portion of the yellow region of the spectrum making such phosphor useful in fluorescent lamps. Furthermore, when blended in specific proportions with a blue-emitting divalent europium activated strontium halophosphate, and incorporated into a fluorescent lamp, the resultant lamp gives an increased lumen per watt output over a "cool white" lamp incorporating a standard "cool white" calcium halophosphate phosphor.
