Abstract: This invention relates to apparatus for arresting a developing fracture in a ribbon of glass by the application of heat of about 950 degrees F. to the area of the fracture and inducing temporary thermal stresses which place the glass in compression, thus arresting and eventually controlling the fracture. The apparatus comprises a crack-sensing device, a control means and a high-intensity heat source which are mounted so as to scan continuously the moving ribbon, and with the heat source being activated in response to the presence of a developing crack. Circuits may be used to move the heat source across the width od the glass ribbon to direct the fracture toward an edge of the ribbon.

Abstract: In the production of fire-polished glass by sliding the formed strip continuously in contact with a molten material, inert at the temperatures of use, which decreases in temperature during the feed of the strip so that the strip can be removed without damage from conveyer members, the molten material is interposed in the form of a film between the strip of glass and a flat solid metal base so as to act as a lubricating agent to facilitate the forward feed of the glass strip. As shown in Figs. 1 and 4, glass 2 flows from a furnace 3 over a lip 4 and over a flat solid metal member 5 forming the base of a tank 6 and spreads to abut carbon straight edges 7 parallel to the sides of the tank 6. A molten substance 10, unaffected by air at working temperatures, is contained in the tank 6 and forms a film over the base 5, the base 5 being provided with grooves 17 to assist the maintenance of the film. The base 5 is heated by resistances 14 in recesses in insulating blocks 15 below the base so that the temperature is controllably decreased from the pouring temperature to about 600 DEG C. at which the surface of the glass is cool enough to be undamaged by the rollers 11, 12 removing the sheet 9 and passing it through the lehr 13. Burners through apertures 16 maintain the temperature required above the glass sheet 9. Preferably, so that an inert atmosphere is unnecessary, the carbon straight edges 7 are covered by the molten substance 10. In place of the solid casting of the base 5, juxtaposed round rods on non-contiguous metal battens may be used. Scrapers 18 remove any molten substance 10 adhering to the strip 9, the scrapers being of glass fibre of higher melting point than the glass strip. Alternatively, blowers may be used to blow heated air against the strip. As shown in Fig. 5, glass strip 9 from a rolling mill 19 slides on an inclined cooled metal table 20 before dipping through a bath of the molten substance 10, which is lighter than the glass, to slide by gravity down the base 5 which is inclined, the strip then being drawn upwardly through the annealing lehr 13. The tank 6 is mounted in a frame 23 pivoted at 24 and articulated at its opposite end to at least one jack 25 so that the inclination is adjustable. The metal used for the base 5 is preferably Ag, An, Cu or an alloy thereof. Materials for the substance 10 are salts, or mixtures of salts, of alkali metals or alkaline earths, preferably the chlorides.

Abstract: The instant invention improves the float-glass process, transforming the operation of changing of a lift-out roll from one that requires a shutdown of three to four days to one that may be conducted without interruption of the production of floatglass ribbon. Hardware related to the dross box is modified to permit a lift-out roll to be moved substantially axially, preferably along with its associated bottom seal. The equipment used preferably includes first (end) and second (center) supportcarriage means; these operate to permit continual rotation of the lift-out roll during the removal operation to prevent warpage.
