Abstract: Various embodiments are based on the study of the design, epitaxy, and performance characteristics of deep ultraviolet (UV) AlGaN light emitting diodes (LEDs). By combining tunnel junction and polarization-engineered AlGaN electron blocking layer, a maximum external quantum efficiency and wall-plug efficiency of 0.35% and 0.21%, respectively, were measured for devices operating at approximately 245 nanometers (nm), which are over one order of magnitude higher than previously reported tunnel junction devices at this wavelength. Severe efficiency droop, however, was measured at very low current densities (approximately 0.25 A/cm2), which, together with the transverse magnetic (TM) polarized emission, are identified to be the primary limiting factors for the device performance. Detailed electrical and optical analysis further show that the observed efficiency droop is largely due to an electrical effect, instead of an optical phenomenon. Studies based on various embodiments suggest that AlGaN deep UV LEDs with efficiency comparable to InGaN blue-emitting quantum wells can be potentially achieved, if issues related to electron overflow and TM polarized emission are effectively addressed.

Abstract: A water filtration assembly for an appliance is disclosed having a filtration housing, a filtration media block positioned within the filtration housing, and an electromagnetic radiation module having an electromagnetic radiation source positioned within the filtration housing. The electromagnetic radiation source is positioned adjacent to the filtration media block. Further, the filtration media block has a hollow cylindrical configuration defining a radiation passageway. As such, water is configured to enter a water inlet of the filtration housing, travel through one or more walls of the filtration media block for treatment and into the radiation passageway for further treatment by the electromagnetic radiation source, and exit a water outlet of the filtration housing.

Abstract: A method of synthesizing a doped carbonaceous material includes mixing a carbon precursor material with at least one dopant to form a homogeneous/heterogeneous mixture; and subjecting the mixture to pyrolysis in an inert atmosphere to obtain the doped carbonaceous material. A method of purifying water includes providing an amount of the doped carbonaceous material in the water as a photocatalyst; and illuminating the water containing the doped carbonaceous material with visible light such that under visible light illumination, the doped carbonaceous material generates excitons (electron-hole pairs) and has high electron affinity, which react with oxygen and water adsorbed on its surface forming reactive oxygen species (ROS), such as hydroxyl radicals and superoxide radicals, singlet oxygen, hydrogen peroxide, that, in turn, decompose pollutants and micropollutants.
