摘要: A method for forming an injection molded component from a host polymer (18) uses a very small quantity of an additive (32) that is efficiently driven to the surface of the component during the injection molding process. The additive exists in the host polymer at a very low concentration in the bulk, much lower than would be necessary to achieve the modification in a homogeneous blend. The additive is an insoluble liquid in the host polymer under the temperature and pressure conditions of injection molding. The additive is driven to the flow front surface (22) during injection molding and then translated to the surface (24) of the component by fountain flow and is distributed on the surface in a thin layer, producing the desired surface modification, without altering the properties of the bulk polymer, and eliminating post processing steps from the manufacturing process.

摘要: A method for an injection molded product having a molten resin containing an aluminum pigment. The injection mold includes resin reservoirs connected to both sides of a cavity, positioned where the molten resin meets as it partly flows therein. The cavity has a design surface of an injection-molded product and both side surfaces continuing from the surface forming the design surface. One of the resin reservoirs is connected to one of the side surfaces and the other resin reservoir is connected to the other side surface, across the position where the molten resin meets. When the molten resin partly flows into the resin reservoirs, flow of the molten resin, which is substantially in parallel from the surface forming the design surface to the resin reservoirs, is generated and aluminum pigment makes an orientation angle of 120° to 140° on the design surface at the position where the molten resin meets.

摘要: A cavity of an injection mold has a ring shape in a plane view, and has a cross-sectional shape having an upper surface forming a design surface of an injection-molded product, both side surfaces continuing from the upper surface, and a bottom surface. When molten resin is injected from a side gate, flows in opposite directions are generated in the cavity and the molten resin meets at a position opposite the side gate in a diameter direction of the cavity, but at this position, the molten resin partly flows into resin reservoirs disposed on both sides. Consequently, since flows horizontal to the upper surface are generated, a luminous material in these flows is also oriented substantially in parallel to the design surface, which can alleviate the disorder of the orientation of the luminous material.

摘要: A method is provided for forming a feedstock material for use in net shape molded component that includes an integral metallized coating or layer on the exterior surface thereof. The feedstock includes a carefully matched mixture of polymer resin and a metallic alloy that is suitable for use in a molding method that includes melting and injecting the material into a mold cavity under pressure. Due to the differential in material viscosities, the metal tends to migrate to the outer surface of the molded part when placed under pressure, ultimately creating a net shape molded part having a polymer core with a metallic layer at the exterior surfaces thereof.

摘要: The disclosed concept relates to methods for the manufacture of molded parts having composite nanofibers deposited on a surface of the molded parts. The molded parts are manufactured by utilizing injection molding techniques. The nanofibers are capable of imparting to the molded part functionality, such as but not limited to electrical conductivity, magnetic properties, thermal conductivity, hydrophobicity and superhydrophobicity. The methods include depositing the nanofibers at least partially on an interior surface of a mold, injecting a polymer-containing composition into the mold and extracting a molded part from the mold. A surface of the molded part includes a layer or coating of nanofibers deposited thereon and/or therein. The nanofibers are transferred from the interior surface of the mold to the surface of the molded part. The mold and molded part can include three-dimensional shapes as well as two-dimensional shapes.
