A receiver member is attached to the chuck, and an engagement member is provided in an elongated recess in the receiver member for engaging the stock. The receiver member is preferably constructed of tool material, such as tool steel, while the engagement member may be made of a lower cost material which is easier to work, such as mild steel. After the engagement member is used one or more times, it may be reworked or expended. Locking means are provided for securing the engagement member to the receiver member during use.

    摘要: A jaw assembly for a jaw chuck for holding a workpiece to the spindle of a machine, such as a lathe, includes an intermediate coupling member that engages a master jaw slot formed in a master jaw which is disposed in a radial guide formed in the body of the chuck. A retaining mechanism secures the intermediate coupling member within the master jaw slot. A top jaw is configured to be connectively engaged with the intermediate coupling member by inserting the intermediate coupling member into a top jaw slot. The top jaw is held securely to the intermediate coupling member, and, accordingly, to the master jaw, when the retaining mechanism is tightened. During top jaw change-out the retaining mechanism is released, thereby permitting the top jaw to be disengaged from the intermediate coupling member while still loosely retaining the intermediate coupling member within the master jaw slot. A new top jaw is installed by merely engaging it with the intermediate coupling member and then re-tightening the retaining mechanism.

    摘要: Each of the jaws of a sliding jaw chuck are moved between workpiece clamping and release positions by a post, the end of which, in active position, is seated in an opening in an octogonal plate seated in a recess in the jaw. The plate is octagonal and its dimensions are such that it always entirely occupies the recess in the direction of movement of the jaw. In contrast, the recess is wider than the plate, permitting the plate, after removal from the recess, to be rotated about the post to any one of five positions. While the plate is symmetrical about its geometric center, the opening for the post is offset from the plates's center which results in changes in the spacing between the post and the ends of the recess, which controls the radial position of the jaw with respect to the axis of rotation of the chuck and thus the size of the workpiece which it can clamp.

    摘要: A chuck for gripping a workpiece during a rotary operation includes a chuck body with a master jaw movably mounted on the chuck body. The master jaw includes a bayonet type locking structure. The master jaw also includes a face with at least one pin reciprocally mounted in and extending perpendicularly from the face. The pin is mechanically coupled to a piston reciprocally mounted in a piston chamber in the master jaw. The piston chamber is in communication with a source of pressurized fluid. The pin is reciprocated by selected communication of pressurized fluid to the piston chamber. A quick-change top jaw is also provided that may be quickly attached to and removed from the master jaw. The top jaw includes a bayonet type locking structure complementary to the bayonet type locking structure on the master jaw. The top jaw also includes an insert for capturing the pin in the master jaw. The top jaw is secured to the master jaw by placing the top jaw on the master jaw and aligning the bayonet locking structures. Pressurized fluid is then introduced into the piston chamber to withdraw the piston and pin. The top jaw is then rotated 90.degree. locking the bayonet type locking structures. Pressurized fluid is then removed from the piston chamber releasing the pin which seats in the insert in the top jaw preventing rotational movement of the top jaw.

    摘要: The jaws of the chuck include a base jaw and a separate, releasable mounting jaw. These two jaw components are connected by at least one shaft which is guided with male-type screw threads in its one end in female-type screw threads of the base jaw. The other end has a lock head which has a projecting lock shoulder, and which lock head can engage in axial direction into a lock retainer in the mounting jaw, when the shaft has been rotated into the position corresponding to the unlocked condition. When the shaft has been rotated into the position which corresponds to the locked condition, it can engage with its lock shoulder in a dovetail formation in axial and positive locking manner. The shaft is further shaped with gear teeth which can operate in the manner of a pinion. In the apparatus there is also provided a control bolt extending transversely to the axis and guided and adapted to be shifted in its longitudinal direction in the base jaw. The control bolt has transversely extending gear-rack type teeth which can meshingly engage with the teeth of the associated shaft. For shifting of a control bolt there are provided control pieces on either side of a base jaw, and these are guided and moved in their longitudinal direction by means of push rods which are axially guided in the chuck base and which can be actuated from the outside of the chuck base against the force of reset springs disposed in the base. Motive power transmission is by wedge-type transmissions.
