An apparatus for generating foam includes a power source such as an internal combustion engine mounted in a frame for portable transportation of the apparatus. The power source drives an air compressor through an electric clutch which can disconnect the air compressor and a water pump. The water pump generates flow of the water under pressure through a duct system either to a water discharge valve or to a foam discharge valve. The foam is generated by injecting into the water stream a surfactant which is injected by reciprocating valve arrangement operated by flow of the water. The flow is controlled by a maximum flow orifice, a minimum flow orifice and an adjustable valve. The air compressor supplies a surge tank and the air is passed from the surge tank through a pressure regulator to a mixing device where the water and surfactant is mixed with the air to generate the foam. The mixing chamber comprises a vertical tube with a central shaft carrying a plurality of conical shaped baffles in spiral arrangement around the shaft.

The device comprises a motor, which is a volumetric screw pump driven in reverse by the hydraulic pressure of the fire fighting water network. Apparatus for admixing fluids in a predetermined proportion characterized by, inter alia, first and second valves, connected together and disposed in their respective tapered throats and sized to effect the correct proportion of fluid flow therepast; the first valve being biased towards its no flow position by suitable force sufficient to require at least 2.5, and preferably about 5 pounds per square inch (p.s.i.) pressure differential across the valve to open it for flow therepast. Delivery systems are provided for delivering the two fluids to be admixed at about the same inlet pressure. The second throat is movable with respect to the second valve to allow some flexibility in adjusting the proportion of the fluids, although for large variations in proportion, or concentration, of the second fluid, the second throat may be changed out entirely to give a larger or smaller range of areas of flow past the second valve.

The invention describes a foam extinguisher device with an extinguisher water supply unit for an extinguisher water-foaming agent mixture and with a pressurizing gas supply unit with a pressure regulating device for a gaseous medium, in particular compressed air. In a gas injection mechanism, the medium is added to the extinguisher water-foaming agent mixture and then delivered to a discharge mechanism. The pressure regulating device is provided in the form of a pressure reducing valve. Via an adjusting device of a pressure-regulating element, an output pressure of the medium within a pre-selectable differential pressure range is adapted to a pressure level of the flow of extinguisher water prevailing at the adjusting device constituting a reference pressure.
