An aircraft including a fuselage defining a cabin and baggage bay, engine compartments for receiving engines, an auxiliary power unit compartment for receiving an auxiliary power unit, and a fire suppression system including first and second reservoirs containing a fire suppressant. The reservoirs are each connected to all of the engine compartments for distribution of the fire suppressant thereto. The first reservoir is connected to only one of the auxiliary power unit compartment and baggage bay, and the second reservoir is connected to only the other of the auxiliary power unit compartment and baggage bay. A fire suppression system for an aircraft and a method of connecting a fire suppression system of an aircraft are also discussed.

Design considerations for other fire sizes and firefighting applications are also presented.

Noise and room air overpressure on discharge of a gas extinguisher system is reduced. During the discharge, an extinguishing fluid is conveyed from a pressurized container via a container valve and line system to an extinguishing nozzle. At the beginning of the discharge the extinguishing fluid is predominantly present in the line system in liquid phase and after discharge it assumes a predominantly gaseous phase. In a phase transition period, which is accompanied by a significant reduction in the extinguishing fluid mass flow and a significant increase in the noise and the room air pressure, the mass flow is then reduced or stopped. Due to the reduction of the mass flow, the sound level of the noise arising is advantageously reduced to a value of a maximum of 100 dB and the room air pressure to an overpressure value ranging from 200 to 1000 Pa.

A control line 31 is established from the ground side controller and the stacker crane, and a fire fighting hose 30 is from the extinguishant supply source to the fire fighting nozzle. A method for introducing material under high pressures into selected areas for various purposes which comprises confining non-gaseous carbon dioxide under pressure, applying heat thereto to produce high pressure carbon dioxide gas, conducting the gas into the material and directing the formed high pressure mixture of carbon dioxide gas and material into the selected area. The invention is used to create pressure surges in oil well drilling fluid in a line and for hurling fire retardant material into fires to rapidly extinguish them. A system for extinguishing fires and preventing explosions comprising a source of high pressure carbon dioxide gas for delivering a fire retardant material under high pressure to the point of combustion instantaneously after combustion starts, the high pressure carbon dioxide source being a series of cartridges containing liquified carbon dioxide provided with heater elements for gasifying the liquid carbon dioxide and communicating with a source of fire retardant material in a tank, or with a manifold connected into a line carrying fire retardant material, the tank or the manifold being connected to a delivery channel for delivering fire retardant material to the point of flame. If an oil well fire is involved, the manifold may be connected into the line in which drilling fluid is delivered to an oil well during drilling, the drilling fluid serving as the fire retardant material. Where fires are not involved, the apparatus can be used to create pressure surges in the drilling fluid line for various purposes.
