An agricultural implement for applying fertilizer beneath the surface of the soil. The implement has a main frame for connecting the agricultural implement to agricultural equipment. A swing arm is pivotally connected to the main frame. An adjustable actuator interconnects the swing arm to the main frame to control the movement of the swing arm with respect to the main frame. A pair of discs are mounted to the free end of the swing arm for rotation with respect to the swing arm. The discs are offset mounted with respect to one another and are angled outwardly with respect to the direction of travel of the implement. The discs form grooves for receipt of fertilizer. Fertilizer tubes are mounted adjacent the discs and terminate behind the discs with respect to the direction of travel. The fertilizer tubes deposit fertilizer in the grooves formed by the discs. A furrow closer is attached to the main frame to close the groove opened by the discs.

A real time soil constituent sensor and precision agricultural chemical delivery system may measure simple in situ soil constituents without the aid of externally applied solvents, or such solvents may be utilized intermittently to calibrate the measurements for greater accuracy. A real time complex in situ soil resistivity sensor and prescription agricultural chemical delivery system includes a plurality of ground-engaging tools in association with individual soil electrode arrays which measure complex solute and matrix resistivity levels. Conventional engaging tools may serve as electrodes for impressing a voltage source and serve as a current sink for the purposes of determining complex resistivity values and components thereof in in situ soils. Alternatively, local resistivity measurements in a single tool can also be employed for separation of resistivity cotributions of the soil solute and the matrix. For calibration, to enhance the accuracy of in situ measurements of matrix resistivity, a plurality of reference fluids of known conductivity are periodically injected at the interface between electrodes on a single tool and the in situ soil. A real-time soil solute and matrix sensor and controller senses and separates the resistivity contributions of the solute and matrix and compares these components against target levels or schedules and adjusts a servo-controlled delivery system to apply the appropriate amount of agricultural chemical substantially in the location from which a calibrated complex soil resistivity measurement was taken.

A combination strip-tiller and applicator is disclosed for conservation farming. The machine is designed to save soil, fertilizer, labor and fuel while producing a higher yield. Unique features of the device include a knife that injects anhydrous ammonia or other chemicals in a broad band under the seedbed. This broad band allows seeds to be planted in the same pass or within a few days without risk of fertilizer burn to the seedlings. The knife also loosens the soil and raises the seedbed. Row cleaners and cultivator gangs can run in the same pass to remove excess crop residual and to further raise the seedbed.

Liquid applications of materials such as herbicides usually are broadcast over the field and then incorporated by harrowing or the like. The present device utilizes a plurality of open based boxes having a rotary cultivator therein with a spray nozzle attached to a supply of liquid chemical under pressure thus restricting the application of the chemical to a band the width of the box and incorporating it at the same time. Rake teeth smooth out the soil behind each applicator and a seeding or planting machine may be hitched behind the incorporator followed by a packer so that the entire chemical treatment, incorporation thereof, planting and packing can be undertaken in one pass over the field.
